B\'s Announce 2011 Award Winners

BOSTON, MA -- Prior to tonight’s game against the New York Islanders, the Boston Bruins presented their regular season awards. The awards were the Eddie Shore Award (exceptional hustle and determination chosen by the “Gallery Gods”), Elizabeth Dufresne Trophy (outstanding performance during home games, voted by Boston media), John P. Bucyk Award (greatest off-ice charitable contributions, chosen by John Bucyk) and Bruins Three Stars Award (top performers at home over the course of the season, chosen by 98.5 The Sports Hub). In addition to the awards, the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) will make a $20,000 donation that will be divided among two local charitable organizations: One Mission and WriteBoston.

This year’s recipient of the Eddie Shore Award, presented by the Gallery Gods, is Shawn Thornton. Thornton has set career highs in goals (9) and assists (9) this season, and had appeared in every Bruins game until sustaining a facial laceration against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 29. The 33-year-old leads the Bruins in penalty minutes (122) and fighting majors (14). Thornton was recently named the Bruins’ nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, given to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey, as selected by the Boston chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Tim Thomas is this year’s recipient of the Elizabeth Dufresne Trophy for his outstanding performance during home games, as chosen by the Boston Chapter of the PWHA and presented by chapter president Joe Haggerty. Thomas has gone 16-5-5 at the TD Garden, with a 1.88 GAA and .939 save percentage. Six of his nine shutouts came at the TD Garden.

This year, the John P. Bucyk Award winner, given to the most charitable Bruin, is Andrew Ference. Some of the most significant programs he has been involved in have included visits to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Boston Latin School, as well as participating in cookie decorating with his family at Pine Street Inn on Christmas Eve. He is also an avid environmentalist and is involved in a number of “green” causes.

The Bruins Three Stars Awards were presented to the three players who have contributed the most to the team’s success this season during Bruins home games. This season the Number One Star is Tim Thomas, the Number Two Star is Patrice Bergeron and the Number Three Star is Milan Lucic.

Tim Thomas has gone 33-11-9 this season with a 2.02 GAA and .938 save percentage. If he keeps his save percentage above .937, he will break Dominik Hasek’s single-season record set during the 1998-99 season (.936). He leads the NHL in goals against and save percentage, and his even strength save percentage is .946. Patrice Bergeron is currently third in the team’s scoring race, with 22-35=57 totals. He is leading the Bruins in takeaways (49) and faceoff percentage (56.6), and he leads Bruins forwards with 54 blocked shots. Milan Lucic leads the Bruins in goals with 30, and he recently became just the 10th player since the 2004-05 work stoppage to amass 30 goals, 30 assists and 100 PIM in a single season.

Also prior to the game, Director of Development for the Boston Bruins Foundation, Bob Sweeney, and the president of the Boston Chapter of the PHWA, Joe Haggerty, presented a check for $10,000 each to both One Mission and WRITE Boston.

Prior to the 2008-2009 NHL season, the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Chapter of the PHWA partnered on a program to raise money for local charities by asking the working media who cover Bruins home games to make a small donation when dining in the Will McDonough Press Room prior to games.

Through the program, those members of the media who dined in the Press Room this season were asked to make an $8.00 donation and 100 percent of the donation went to the Boston Bruins Foundation. Over the course of the season, the Foundation collected $20,000 worth of donations. The Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Chapter of the PHWA then worked together to select One Mission and WriteBoston as recipients of the $20,000. Since its inception, the program has raised $50,000 for local charitable organizations.

One Mission is a childhood cancer foundation dedicated to enhancing the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families. They are a registered 501 (c) (3) foundation that provides help, hope, care, and support to children and their families touched by pediatric cancer. WriteBoston works to improve writing proficiency among high school students by matching teachers with expert writing coaches and creating opportunities for students to engage in the writing process with peers and community members.
