Kaberle: From Toronto to Boston
BostonBruins.com – On Friday afternoon, Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced that the club had acquired defenseman Tomas Kaberle in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, in exchange for forward Joe Colborn (currently with the Providence Bruins), Boston’s own first round pick in this year’s draft and a conditional second round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

The Bruins will give Toronto their second round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft if Boston makes the Stanley Cup Finals this season or if the team re-signs Kablerle at the conclusion of his current contract set to expire at the end of this season.

“We felt that we needed a player like Tomas [Kaberle] -- a player with good vision, a good skater who can quarterback a power play, and has played many many games in the league,” said Chiarelli at an afternoon press conference in TD Garden.

Kaberle, contacted on his way to Scotiabank Place to join the Bruins, said it was difficult to leave Toronto, but that he  was pleased to join Boston in the midst of a run to the playoffs.

“I found out after practice today. My reaction was mixed feelings. Obviously, you know here 13 years and playing for the Leafs," he said. "It’s sad to leave but at the same time I'm happy to go to Boston.

“[They're] 'Original Six,'" continued Kaberle. "It’s a really good team; good organization.

"Hopefully I have a chance to play in the playoffs.”

The 6-foot-1, 214-lb native of Rakovnik, Czech Republic had 3-35-38 totals in 58 games this season with Toronto, along with 16 PIM.

Prior to joining Boston, Kaberle had accumulated 83-437-520 totals, all with the Maple Leafs.

“[I am an] offensive-minded puck mover, [with a] skate and pass mentality,” Kaberle said today in a phone interview. “Hopefully I’ll help out the power play and offensive guys on the team.”

Kaberle has represented the Czech Republic in the Olympics three times (2002, 2006, 2010), with 3-5-8 totals in 17 games. He won a bronze medal at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, and in 2010 he played alongside fellow Bruin David Krejci.

In 77 career play-off games, Kaberle has 6-22-28 totals.

“I’m just going to try to fit to the team first,” Kaberle said when asked how he can help the Bruins. “Hopefully we’ll have to keep it simple tonight.

"Obviously, the first couple practices are going to tell more about the system and everything.

“Hopefully I’ll jump right into it and fit well.”

Originally drafted by Toronto in the 8th round (204th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, the 32-year-old Kaberle is in his 12th NHL season.

Throughout his 12 seasons, Kaberle has played in 878 NHL games and has amassed a career plus-25.

Despite spending his entire career in Toronto, Kaberle is excited to now be a Bostonian.

“I think it’s a great sports city and hockey city,” he said. "I know I always liked the fans and inside the stadium they've [always] been loud...when we played them, it was such a good atmosphere.”
