Colborne Got Top Billing, Too
Boston, MA -- Obviously, during the Bruins 2010 Development Camp, the eyes of the hockey world were on Boston Bruins #1 pick Tyler Seguin. But even though it was "The Seguin Show" for much of the media, another #1 pick, Joe Colborne, garnered plenty of the spotlight during the Black & Gold rookies annual rite of passage.

The big forward wowed Wilmington with his size and strength, but his purposeful and powerful first step into a leadership role was welcomed by the entire Hub of Hockey.

For his part, Colborne said he was quite comfortable in the role.

"Yeah it’s kind of nice," he explained. "I was lucky enough to wear the captain's "C" in my junior team [for a time] when I was 16 or 17-year old.

"Our captain got injured...and it kind of got that taste in my mouth but other then that I haven’t really had too much of a chance to be a vocal guy. I came in as the youngest guy on my team in Denver and had more of a leadership role this last year.

"Now that I was one of the older guys it was a shock to the system a little bit. You know? I kind of took it to heart and learned all that I could. There are good leaders that I’ve had in the past and hopefully the rest of the guys thought I did a pretty good job," he said.

The B's thought that Joe did a good job as did the players that Colborne called before camp.
Asked about the camaraderie that had developed between the campers, B's Assistant GM Don Sweeney said that was an excellent byproduct of the weeks activities and singled Colborne and those calls for some accolades.

"Well, make no mistake about it; the ultimate goal is to produce the best NHL players we can," stated Sweeney. "The more that we can build camaraderie and using that as an example of them understand that they have a change to be teammates and be part of something that we hope to win.

"Ultimately, we’re just trying to win and I hope with all my heart that these guys come in here and grab a hold of it right from the get-go and the culture that we’re trying to create and the momentum we have and they continue to push that forward.

"I think that helps in that regard. We referenced earlier in the week where Joe Colborne had reached out to a number of these kids and given them a little heads up. That’s the stuff that you hope for [from] each and every one [of the players]. Next year it might be somebody else that reaches out to a young draft pick, so you’ve created that momentum and the culture that we’re hoping to continue to build growing forward," he said.

At the end of camp Colborne said he hoped that what was started here would continue in the NHL B's locker room.

"Well I think you see different teams throughout the year playing in AHL and in college and in juniors. You don’t have the chemistry in the room then as the year goes on things start to fall apart no matter how good you are on the ice," said Joe. "I think the chemistry in the room is really what makes it go that extra mile for the teammates and makes you want to go and block that shot for them.

"I think what they’ve started to build here and will continue to build is perfect in the long run to help win a Stanley Cup."
