Tweaking the Composition
Los Angeles -- Yesterday, in an interview shown on BostonBruinsTV.com, B's GM Peter Chiarelli revisited his reasoning for the trade that brought Greg Campbell and Nathan Horton to Boston and sent Dennis Wideman and two draft picks to Florida.

On Wednesday, B's GM Peter Chiarelli hinted that he might not be done with his D.
"We had an opportunity to get a big, strong young power forward who is a perennial 20-goal scorer," said Chiarelli. "We feel [Horton] can be a 40-goal scorer and we have been trying [to find that] for a while.

"Dennis [Wideman] was an important part of our team, but you have to give up something to get something and is someone that [Panthers] wanted.

"We also had to give up that pick, which is a good pick, but we feel the draft is so deep that at 32 we’re going to get someone that we feel we could have probably gotten at 15.

"That was most of the reasoning but whenever you get a change to get a player like that – especially since we’ve been challenged goal wise this past year – a lot of it is being able to get into a position to score and Nathan can certainly do that."

Boston had made a point to stress offense starting off the blueline and Wideman, a true "puck mover" had been -- at times -- Boston's most potent weapon off the D.

"Well, I talked about this in the conference call, a puck moving defensemen they seem to be the most highly sought after things in all of professional sports," said Chiarelli. "Dennis does that. I think he’s one of the best passing defensemen in the league. But we’ve got players that can pass the puck, we acquired a guy this past deadline [in Dennis] Siedenburg who can pass like Zee [Zdeno Chara] – all of our guys can pass the puck.

"We have guys that can skate moving it up the ice whether it’s [Andrew] Ference or [Matt] Hunwick, and we got some young guys that can fill that void. They’re not ready yet but it may be that we make further changed to our D.

"I don’t know yet, but if everything remains the same I’m pretty happy with where we are at."

Chiarelli implied that there might be re-emphasis on offense from the backline from the coaching staff, as well.

Seidenberg figures heavily in the B's plans.
"You know its mentality too," said Chiarelli. "Claude [Julien] and I have spoken about that.
"It’s about getting the puck quickly to the seams and that’s a mentality that we’re going to continue to try and instill in the players."

And perhaps a further tweaking of the team's mentality can prevent collapses like the Philadelphia series from occurring.

"Well the word that one of the [writers] used is culture," said Chiarelli with an eye toward clarification. "To me that’s a major makeover.

"That’s not what we’re trying to do here we’re just trying to change the composition a little bit and we’re bringing in a guy like Horton. And Greg Campbell, for example, he’s a gritty center man that can play a lot of different roles and he’s defensively sound and battles and I’ve seen him drop the gloves a few times.

"Both those guys are young too they are going to bring some enthusiasm to team. To change the culture that’s a major – major makeover and we’re not doing that we’re tweaking the composition and that’s what we’re trying to achieve."
