Bostonbruins.com – For Marco Sturm, the Olympics will be a family affair.

The Bruins forward said his 6-year-old son Mason is already excited to see his father represent Germany on sport’s biggest stage.

“He understands and he knows I’m going to play for Germany and he will come,” Sturm said. “He was drawing me a picture the other day of the German flag.

“He’s getting at that age where he understands more about hockey and more about Germany and the Olympics too.”

The veteran has represented Germany internationally 11 times, including two Olympics. Though ice hockey has a smaller following in Gerrnany, Sturm said the invitation to play for his country is an unbelievable honor.

“It’s definitely pretty rare in Germany, to play on the German Olympic Team,” he said. “It’s a pleasure and honor and I’m really excited about it.”

Though the German team only earned a medal once, the bronze in 1932, Sturm says the experience of the Olympics is reward enough.

“But just to be in there, to see all the things that go on and the whole environment, it’s very special,” said Sturm.

The 31-year-old is the all-time leader in all categories in the NHL for a player born and raised in Germany. As such, he says his favorite part of the Olympics is to see his younger teammates have the opportunity to play against the best of the best.

“The bottom [line] is you got to have fun and you got to enjoy it and play some good hockey,” Sturm said. “For most of the guys on our team, that’s a really good chance for them to prove themselves and also to play against the best hockey players in the world.

“There’s no better chance to show that than in the Olympics.”
