Bourque Awarded Bennett
Boston, MA -- Wayne Bennett never thought he would get paid to go to a Bruins game—especially not to the tune of $10,000, awarded by Bruins legend Ray Bourque. But that’s exactly what happened this before the third period of today’s Bruins/Rangers matinee.

In the “Convenience Card Case” game, sponsored by TD Bank, every fan over 18 who entered the TD Garden received a TD Convenience Card. Six numbers were randomly chosen, and those six fans who had the corresponding numbers were escorted on the ice by the Bruins Ice Girls.

Each were paired with a sealed case, and one-by-one, their prizes were revealed.  Three fans walked away with $1,000 each, two won $500 each, and one, Wayne Bennett, received the grand prize of $10,000.

The Lynn, MA resident, said he was still in shock moments after stepping off the ice. Overwhelmed and excited, Bennett summed up his feelings with one word, “speechless.”

The Hockey Hall of Famer Bourque was honored to help make Bennett a richer man.

“I’ve done a lot of things with TD, so I’m not surprised because they’re very generous … in terms of what they do of promoting the bank,” he said.  “It’s pretty neat seeing a fan come to the game and leaving the game with some money, so I’m sure they’re very happy.”

When asked if he missed being out on the ice with the B’s, Bourque was appreciative of the sentiment.

“I kind of miss that in some ways, but there’s no way I could be out there [playing] so that’s as close as I want to get to there right now,” he joked.

TD Bank's representative, Vice President for Retail Marketing Brian McEvoy, explained the reason for such an extravagant giveaway.

“TD Bank is all about surprising and delighting our customers and our community, and as you know, we have a relationship with the Garden and the Bruins and it allows us to do special things like this,” he said.

Bennett, who said he’d been a Bruins fan since Bobby Orr, was grateful for TD Bank and for his luck.

He said, “I just want to thank [TD Bank] for giving me $10,000, and I’m still just shocked.”
