6:04 p.m.
Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has promoted Don Sweeney to Assistant General Manager. Sweeney joins Jim Benning as one of the two Assistant General Managers of the club.

“Don deserves this promotion,” said Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli.  “He is a very diligent person who truly cares about the welfare and development of the player both from the personal and professional perspective.  In his three years as part of our management group, he has shown tremendous passion, a growing aptitude for the business side of hockey and most importantly the willingness and enjoyment of being part of a management team and learning from others like Jim Benning and Scott Bradley.  I believe in this business model with two assistant GMs because of the ever increasing intricacies of this business and the good chemistry between those in our group. Jim, Don and Scott will all continue to have specific duties and responsibilities, and I will continue to rely heavily on all three individuals.”

12:57 p.m.
Columbus is bringing: Methot, Russell, Blunden, Torres, Dorsett, Brassard, Murray, Picard, Sestito, MacKenzie, Filatov, Roy, Boll, Liffiton, Skoula, Clitsome, Legein, Calvert, Mason and Garon.

They did not skate in Boston this morning.

12:17 p.m.
The guys that are really battling obviously wanted to leave an impression," said Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julien following the Bruins 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators. "It was nice to see those guys compete hard tonight."

Tim Thomas left a lasting impression as well, as last season's Vezina winner earned his second straight 2-1 victory in as many nights. The veteran goalie stopped 35 shots in his best performance of the exhibition docket.

"Fortunately I was able to get through the kind of uncomfortable stage at the beginning," said Thomas, who said that he had talked to B's goalie coach Bob Essensa and Julien about playing back-to-back games. "[Bob] threw it out there...he thought maybe it would be a good way to get into rythm.

"Goalie Bob" was right. Thomas looked very sharp -- even if he didn't necessarily feel 100% rested.

"[Essensa] actually likes it when I play a little bit tired because I'm a little bit more controlled," said Thomas with a smile, postgame. "[So] in the second game I would be a little more conservative."

Thomas said that he felt "a lot better than last Saturday against the Rangers.

"Having said that, it is the preseason," he said. "You have to do it for real when the time comes."

And we have 83 (82 regular, 1 preseason) games left to go...

11:15 a.m.
Tonight's possibles. Obviously there will be four scratches somewhere:

Forwards: Begin, Bergeron, Bitz, Kobasew, Hamill, Krejci, Lucic, Marchand, Recchi, Ryder, Savard, Sobotka, Sturm, Thornton and Wheeler. Defensemen: Boychuk, Chara, Ference, Hunwick, Morris, Stuart, and Wideman. Goaltenders: Rask, Thomas

9:55 a.m.

Derek Morris confirmed what everyone else saw on Friday night -- Shawn Thornton and Milan Lucic's pugilistic efforts certainly turned the tide of the Bruins penultimate exhibition contest.

"Every knows [that]," said Morris. "[Ottawa's Chris Neil] took a pretty hard hit on [Mark Savard]. A little bit high.

"Luch is one of those guys that battles for his teammates.

"Thortie went out and got one early and changed the momentum and Luch backed it up."

Everyone on the Bruins bench enjoyed and appreciated the shot of adrenaline.

"If we don't feed off stuff like that, we're in the wrong game," he said.
