State of the Bruins \'09
Boston, MA -- Topics ranged from the signing of Phil Kessel, to why P.J. Axelsson wasn’t retained, all the way to Cheerios and the correct pronunciation of Milan Lucic’s last name (which Milan himself said it’s “LooCheech” not “LooChick”) at the annual State of the Bruins Town Hall Meeting held at the TD Garden on Thursday evening.

In attendance were Jeremy Jacobs, owner of the Boston Bruins; Charlie Jacobs, principal; General Manager Peter Chiarelli; Vice President Cam Neely; Head Coach Claude Julien; as well as B's forwards Patrice Bergeron and Milan Lucic and defenseman Derek Morris.

NESN commentator and Bruins alumni Andy Brickley served as the moderator.

A participant at last year’s event, Milan Lucic agreed to help out again and this year take on additional duties. In his rookie season he modeled the Bruins Third Jersey.

“Well, I didn’t have to talk too much last year," said the sophomore forward. "But I just had to wear that new jersey, the third that we had last year,

“But I think it’s a good thing for season ticket holders, for us to communicate with them and answer their questions before the season starts.”

Derek Morris, new to the squad this season, said he was looking forward to the event.

“It’s always fun to see what people really want to ask you and what they’re going to think,” said Morris.

“There’s probably going to be 2,000 people there I heard, a lot of people, and hopefully they have a lot of questions for us.”

This event is part of Morris’ introduction to the Bruins, but he already feels great about being in Boston.

“The reason this team is going to win now and continue on is because of the way it’s [the team is] ran right now,” said Morris.

“For me it was a great opportunity and I’m not going to over look it.”

And Morris was right about the size of the crowd. It reached more than 2,700 people and they were asking tons of questions including one about the importance of having the roster made up of players who want to wear the spoked-B.

“It’s very important for me,” said Cam Neely of the Bruins tradition during the event. "It’s important for the rest of our staff and our ownership to have players that want to be Boston Bruins. It’s that simple.

“I wanted to play for them,” continued Neely. “It was a great place for me to play, a great city to play in… a great original six hockey team.

“We’re showing that we’re a competitive team and [We want] to win a Stanley Cup.

"That’s what we’re striving for," he said.

Neely also spoke eloquently abou the character of the players who wear the spoked-B.

“We’ve had players say that they want to play here and...those are the players that want to put on that jersey and be proud to be a Boston Bruin," said Neely. "I think we’re working hard towards that, I think that’s been shown in the last couple years.”

Attention then turned to the players.

Everyone watching learned that before games Lucic eats a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios, three slices of bacon and some fruit. Then after morning skate he indulges in some pasta with chicken and a side salad.

But beyond Lucic's breakfast, the most anticipated part of the evening came at the tail end of the event, when the TD Garden produced a mini snowstorm -- inside.

The snow preceded the unveiling of the Winter Classic jersey, introduced by Neely and worn by forward David Krejci.

The jersey, which was designed by Neely, is brown and gold to signify the Bruins original colors and represents more than 80 years of Bruins history.
