They\'re Back!

Today the Bruins did their off-ice testing in preparation for their first mandatory on-ice session on Sunday. The Bruins I talked to all had similar things to say about their preparation for training camp, their hopes for the preseason and what they want to accomplish before the regular season begins.

"Everybody comes in great shape and is ready to go -- so that's they way it is these days," said Marc Savard. "I think we are all excited to get going."

As far as his work during the summer, Savard said that status quo was the way to go.

"You know, I just [did]...the same things that made me successful the last couple of years, and I think that's all I really focused on," said the playmaker, who admitted to a bit of anxiousness coming into the start of camp.

"I think there always is, you know? I think there's always something more to prove and you know the young kids are coming in too, and you want to show good leadership in that sense," said Savard. "[Veterans want to show] that you are going to come in and work hard in training camp and get ready for the season.

"Because, even though we play in the summers and skate a bit, nothing is like when you get on the ice and get in those battles.

"You have to be ready to work hard...have fun and be focused," he said.

Speaking about the B's first preseason game -- Tuesday in New York versus the Rangers --Milan Lucic talked about the quick transition from summer to games.

"You come here in shape, to get things started up right away in camp," said Lucic. "It's good to get the feel of things and get right back into games."

Sobotka
Vladimir Sobotka understands what is at stake for him and all of the other young players in the B's system. They have just a short time to impress the brass and win a spot. Consequently, Sobotka also admitted to a bit of nerves about training camp.

"This is my third training camp, but I am still nervous," said Sobotka (whose English has improved remarkably over that time). "I want to do my best here and get better.

"I think I am in good shape. I was practicing on the ice for a month with my old team, so I feel like I am in pretty good shape.

"I want to show them my best, play hard and do what Coach [Julien] wants."

His captain, Zdeno Chara, who wowed the media when they learned of his 31 pull ups during testing, sounded no different from the rookie Sobotka.

"Obviously, I want to do my best, just like in every training camp," he said. "There is a lot of...competition and it's always involved and you want to set a example.

"So that should, pretty much, be the same mindset for everybody else."

Chara, who came into the league at the tail end of the time when training camp was the period to get into shape (even though one would imagine that wouldn't apply to the Norris Trophy winner), said that things have changed significantly.

"It's different these days -- coming into the training camp -- [you want to be] in your best possible shape and you try to prove it," he said. "There's really no time to be getting into shape."

As such, Chara kept up with his rigorous training regimine.

"It was pretty much the same," he said. "I take it pretty seriously. I enjoy working out and I enjoy the whole preparation for getting ready for the whole season. And...I approached it the same as always."

Hopefully, everyone else followed the captain's example.
