BOSTON, MA - After experiencing a taste of military life last week with the US Coast Guard, Shawn Thornton and his wife, Erin, took some time on Thursday, August 20 to give back to some very special Boston veterans.

The Thornton’s along with Hell’s Kitchen contestant, and South Shore native, Kevin Cottle, cooked and served meals at the New England Center for Homeless Veterans in Boston.

As soon as they arrived, the Thornton's took their lead from Chef Cottle, and went straight into the kitchen to begin cooking the evening meal. After some minor struggles with the plastic gloves, the trio dove right in to making meatloaf and getting to know one another.

But when the talk turned to Shawn’s skills in the kitchen, the Bruin admitted that he leaves most of the cooking to his wife.

“We try to keep him out of the hospital as much as possible,” joked Erin Thornton.

With the meal cooked, and no Bruins injured in the process, the three immediately donned aprons and began preparing to serve over 200 hungry veterans.

This meal, which Thornton jokingly told everyone they would be happy he didn’t prepare, was cooked earlier in the day by chef Cottle.

The chef spiced up traditional meatloaf adding Parmesan cheese, fresh herbs, sun dried and oven roasted tomatoes and a “little extra love”.

The vets lined up to be served their dinner as Shawn once again wrestled with the plastic gloves.  But with a little help, the Bruin was ready to go and the first wave of hungry veterans were served meat, corn and gravy by Shawn, Erin and Chef Cottle.

After two hours of cooking and serving, the Bruins contingent was finally finished.  And despite the 90-degree day and hours inside a hot kitchen, the three were all smiles as they left the center.

"It was good getting up close and personal with all the guys who have given so much to this country," said Thornton.  "Everyone seemed to like their meals.  It was great.”
