Backyard Baseball Memories
While we are at it, I’ve got to say that yesterday could not have been much cooler.

Like many of you, I grew up a New England sports fan, and the summertime portion of that docket officially belonged to the Red Sox.

And like many of you, my backyard was imagined to be Fenway Park when my friends Chris and Johnny took my brother Andrew and I on in Whiffleball behind the expansive Bishop manse in Enfield, Connecticut.

Those struggles continued behind the house from whenever little league ended until we decided it was touch football/street hockey season. But I digress.

Yesterday, I fulfilled nearly a lifetime’s dream by standing exactly where my heroes Ted, Yaz and Jim once stood  -- in front of the Green Monster in left field at Fenway.

A decent view of Fenway Park.
Now, it didn’t exactly happen the way I thought it would – I had thoughts of running out on the field in the late innings, enjoying the cool breeze off the Charles as I adjusted my cap; a September call-up trying to win a spot with the big club the following season -- instead, I was continuing to fulfill another life-long dream with the Bruins.

As I accompanied the five B's who attended yesterday’s Winter Classic announcement I had a very big smile on my face. Despite the heat and the sunshine hanging out on the field at Fenway was still one of the cooler destinations this job has taken me.

I was fulfilling a lifetime dream by fulfilling a lifetime dream. That doesn't happen that often.

Thoughts…
  • Fenway is a LOT bigger from the field than you ever thought watching on TV or in the stands. And the "Green Monstah," which we all swear we could clear with one good swing of the bat, is REALLY tall. Really tall.  I have since amended my own internal boasts and so should you.
  • The grass at Fenway is really that green. In fact, it’s downright beautiful.
  • Contrary to popular opinion, the most obnoxious part of the ballpark, for those of us who have ever stood in an outfield, has to be center field. How anyone negotiates The Wall, the bullpen and the shear depth of center without killing themselves (by accident or suicide) is beyond me. Jacoby, you can have it!

TD Banknorth Garden becomes TD Garden
Ladies and Gents, I don't often do the whole advert thing in this space, but today's prizes and the appearance of a five Bruins has me thinking that you True Believers might want to take part. JB

From TDGarden.com: And if you come to the TD Garden on Thursday, July 16, and beginning at 12 noon, thousands of FREE limited edition TD Garden chocolate bars will be given out. Five golden tickets will be hidden inside the wrapper of chocolate bars.

The five Golden ticket winners will receive a behind the scenes tour of the TD Garden, where numerous surprises await them and a guest.

At the end of the Golden Ticket tour, one lucky winner will receive Season Tickets* to the TD Garden for the 2009-10 season! Yup, you read that right. This prize includes season tickets to the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, Boston Blazers, as well as ticket packages to concerts, family shows, and TD Garden marquee events such as the Beanpot Tournament and Hockey East. Read the fine print on what this includes, because you won't believe it. This prize is so special, only one can be given to commemorate the new name of the TD Garden.

The other Golden Ticket winners won't go away empty handed. They will each win a 10-game ticket package* for a combo of Bruins and Celtics games, and a $500 Garden Gold Card. Prize details.

Beyond that, hidden on the inside of the wrapper of hundreds of chocolate bars will be additional prizes such as pairs of tickets to Bruins and Celtics games, as well as concerts, family shows, and TD Garden marquee events such as the Beanpot Tournament and Hockey East.

To win, all you need is a chocolate bar, it's as simple as that!
---
And while you are at it, you might just run into Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Marco Sturm, Shawn Thornton or Aaron Ward! Fresh off their appearance at Fenway Park on Wednesday, the five Bruins will be helping to distribute the TD Garden Chocolate bars!

Save one for me!
