Bish's Blog: July 9th

Day Three at Dev Cap '09

Thursday, 07.09.2009 / 9:26 AM / Bish's Blog
By John Bishop  - BostonBruins.com
4:58 p.m.
Nice to meet you Yuri
Following today's on-ice session Yuri Alexandrov became a major topic of conversation.

"First of all, we're really excited," said Sweeney of Alexandrov attending Development Camp this summer. "He jumped in with two feet here…and we're very pleased that Yuri took a lot of the initiative to be here."

That must be particularly so since Sweeney has seen the defenseman improve since the B's drafted him in 2006.

"From the progression I've seen when I saw him in the World Juniors a couple years ago, I think he’s made some real nice strides," said Sweeney. "He’s physically fit [and] he needs to probably add some strength and bulk in order to play [in the NHL].

"But he’s been playing against men so I think he understands that and he’s probably smarter on the ice from that standpoint," he said.

And getting to know their prospects better is basically the point of this week.

"That’s the benefit of having him over here; being able to watch and evaluate him," said Sweeney. "We have a better understanding of him as a player.

“He wasn’t available for a period of time to come over so again I think were really happy that in a lot of ways, he took the initiative to come over. Obviously, we set things up but he certainly jumped on board and we're really happy about that."

You can catch the rest of Sweeney's presser here.

12:23 p.m.
And we're done. After a final stretch, the players head to the locker room.

More on this morning in a bit.

12:20 p.m.
The latest drill is literally a race to center ice between two players, followed by a fight to the goal by the same players and finally a shot on goal.

A fun drill to watch if not to perform.

11:57 a.m.
Tommy Cross is on the ice (working with the goalies)...

Cross, who has fought injury throughout his time as a B's prospect, made his first on-ice appearance yesterday and looked like he would have to be wrestled away from the rink today had the B's decided to keep him off the rink.

11:42 a.m.

The power skating/skills session is certainly working -- the guys are winded. But it really doesn't look like a "power skating" class today.

This time the the players are using pucks and making hockey movements.

11:28 a.m.
We've switched over to a skill session. It looks a bit different today with a drill that looks like keep-away.

10:29 a.m.
A board-to-board mini game. This is cool.  A nice goal by Brady Lamb is an early highlight.

10:12 a.m.
Hello! Battle drills...

9:59 a.m.
One-on-ones. Good contact. Some nice plays, defensive stops and saves.

9:51 a.m.
I enjoy watching Matt Dalton play goal -- he competes hard on EVERY puck...

...just like another goalie we all know and love.

9:46 a.m.
Sitting in the stands, Don Sweeney almost got his head taken off by an errant puck...

He ducked just in time. Phew...

9:43 a.m.
The "Lines" look the same...
Sexton, Goggin, MacDermid (Orange)
Lawrence, Colborne, LoVecchio (Blue)
Arniel, Campbell, Randell (Yellow)
Hamill, Sauve, Caron (Gray)
Isherwood, Alexandrov, Lamb, Ludwig, Button, Kwiet, Goulet (Black)
Hutchinson, Courchaine, Dalton (Goal)
DNP:
Riendeau, Cross, McElvie

9:29 a.m.

The entire  roster looks to be coming on the ice at the same time this morning.

Solidarity?
