New B\'s Pleased to Get an Opportunity
Boston, MA -- Most of us will never have the pleasure of being drafted by an NHL team. Just by listening to the young men who were chosen by the B's during the 2009 Draft you can tell that until it actually happens you are not able to fathom the opportunity.

Following last weekend’s draft, and in the coming years, the Boston Bruins will give five more young men a chance to play in the NHL.

“I had no idea where I was going to go,” said B’s first round pick Jordan Caron. “There were a lot of teams I met with twice [and] Carolina was right after Boston so I thought maybe I had a chance there.

“But Boston is unbelievable.”

Boston’s third round pick was ecstatic as well.

“We were just kind of watching with laptops and TV’s and kind of taking it [in] and waiting for me to get called,” said Ryan Button. “Boston is my dad’s favorite team, he grew up watching them and he just loves them.

“So it was just awesome when Boston picked my name for my dad and myself.”

The B’s fourth-rounder, Lane MacDermid, is the son of former Hartford Whaler Paul MacDermid and was the oldest of the B’s draft picks (19) and even he couldn’t hide his excitement.

“We have a great team, a lot of good young players,” said the new Bruin. “I’m excited to try and help them out with any aspects that they want.

“I’ve been getting a lot of calls and text messages here so Ill just stay around here and celebrate with my friends and family.”

Boston’s sixth round pick had no idea what might happen.

“I had thoughts,” said Tyler Randell. “I wanted to go [to Montreal] and I was told…if you’re not sure you’re going in the first or second round than you should probably just stay home with your family and watch it.

“I actually didn’t meet with the Bruins at all so, big surprise… It’s a good organization and good team.”
As happy as the picks sounded, the B’s brass was as least as enthusiastic as their new players.

“I really liked our blend to start off whether with Caron and Button,” said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli. “[In them] we get some size scoring to start and then we get that mobile retrieving guy, puck-moving guy.

“So, that allowed us to get a little bit more into the ‘sandpaper’ players.

“I think you heard [the] descriptions on the rest of those guys, size and grit are common denominators in the rest of those players,” he said.

Boston’s director of amateur scouting, Wayne Smith, was very pleased with the 2009 selection process as well.

“You’re always a little anxious whether you’re going to get somebody that you are really interested in,” he said. “I think we got lucky that we were able to select Jordan [Caron] and…that started our weekend off on a real good foot.

“We were able to add a puck-moving defenseman with a lot of speed [in Button], which is certainly at a premium as far as free agent signing and trades go, and we have one that we think we can develop into a National Hockey League player.

“And [with MacDermid, Randell, and Ben Sexton, the B’s 7th round selection] we continued on our path to be ‘hard to play against’ and the people we selected are all hard to play against. They’re competitive kids and they are focused on winning the Stanley Cup – that’s their sole focus.”

Jordan, Ryan, Lane, Tyler and Ben, welcome to Boston.
