Bear Essentials: February 19th
2:10 p.m.
Claude Julien reports that Petteri Nokelainen is still day-to-day. However, he said that Nokelainen should fully recover from his injury and that he is home skating with Strength and Conditioning Coach John Whitesides.

Mark Stuart missed today's practice due to personal reasons. He should return in time to practice tomorrow.

Michael Ryder participated in today's session using a chrome cage. He did not seem hampered by the new facial protection.

12:53 p.m.
A little bit of a two-on-two battle drill is going on. P.J. Axelsson took particular glee in throwing Marc Savard into the boards. A big grin from the Swede.

12:44 p.m.
The Bruins are on the ice -- early -- and are running through line drills.

There is no discernible slowdown from having the day off.

The only missing person is Mark Stuart. I will get you an update on that ASAP.

After a day of R&R, the Bruins return to practice on Thursday and Friday in preparation for their tilts with the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Practice Schedule
Thursday, February 19 (Sunrise, FL)
-Practice at Bank Atlantic Center 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET

Friday, February 20 (Coral Springs, FL)
-Practice at Incredible Ice 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET

Yesterday’s activities consisted of a deep sea fishing trip or a round of golf. I jumped onto the golf bus and headed to the Weston Hills Golf Course.

Andrew Ference, Milan Lucic and Stephane Yelle invited me to tag along and I was able to get a few pictures.

“This was real nice,” said Lucic. “We are very appreciative that we got a day like this…and I think it’s a bit of a reward because we’ve worked hard, so far, this season.

“It was a really fun day.”

Yelle agreed and said days like yesterday were an important part of being a team.

“We have a really good group that gets along, so it just reinforces those relationships,” he said. “It’s always fun and it’s always good.”

Ference, who seemed to enjoy the sunshine more than anyone, was very enthusiastic about the event.

“We have fun playing hockey, obviously,” said Ference when asked about having fun on his day off. “But just to change it up [is important].”

“You don’t get to hang out as guys in a real casual setting. If you are at games or practice, it’s a different kind of fun. It’s intense.

“So, it’s kind of nice to do [this],” said the defenseman.

But Ference made it clear that the Bruins camaraderie did not hinge on a round of golf.

“We’ve gotten beyond that ‘getting to know the guys’ hang out stuff,” said Ference. “This was about having a good time.”

That mission was successful.

The B’s hit the ice at 1:00 p.m. So look for plenty of updates. JB
