Wilmington, MA -- Having two goaltenders that Bruins head coach Claude Julien considers ‘number ones’ has come to be a big advantage for the Bruins. That fact even holds true when one of the pair is on the shelf.

Manny Fernandez hasn’t been playing or practicing due to what Bruins head coach Claude Julien called "general soreness" and although he didn’t practice Friday, Julien said he is expected back on the ice on Saturday morning.

“I think the plan is probably for him to go out on the ice...and slowly work his way back,” said Julien. “He’s feeling, obviously, much better and that’s part of the plan.”

Although Fernandez took another break just before the All-Star break, Julien said Fernandez is expected to be 100 percent when he comes back.

“It’s just one of those situations where at one point we said okay let’s take that approach, let’s do it right the first time and let’s get it over with,” said Julien.

“That really is what it is because he’s feeling much better and once he comes back he’s going to definitely be 100 percent.”

With Fernandez out, Tim Thomas has seen a lot of action in the past few weeks, including playing in the All-Star game on January 25. However, Julien said he isn’t worried about overworking him.

“We’ve had the opportunity to give both goaltenders an opportunity to get their rest by utilizing them both and when you get into this kind of a tough situation they’re able to obviously handle it a lot better,” said Julien.

“We all know that Tim is, when he’s a well rested goaltender, he’s as good as they come.”

That said, Julien explained that the two goaltender system has benefited both Thomas and Fernandez because it gives them each a chance to rest.

“The fact that we had really two good goaltenders, we were utilizing them because they were both playing well, but when something happens to one, you know you’ve got another one that’s just as good,” he said.

But Julien added, it also gives them an advantage.

“Sometimes you lose your number one goaltender and it certainly changes the outlook of your team when your number two isn’t quite as good as your number one,” said Julien.

“So that’s what our luxury is we have two guys that we feel are capable of being number ones.”

Notes: Only two Boston Bruins were missing for practice on Friday. David Krejci joined Manny Fernandez on the sidelines. Krejci was given a "maintenance day" and will play today and Fernandez was set to return to the ice this morning for practice...Winchester, MA native Alicia Sacramone will participate in the ceremonial puck drop before the Bruins/Rangers game at the TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Sacramone, who helped lead Team USA to the Silver Medal in gymnastics at the 2008 Summer Olympics, will join Bruins captain Zdeno Chara and Rangers (and former Boston University hockey) captain Chris Drury at center ice for the dropping of the puck and a photo following the national anthem...The Bruins lead the Eastern Conference in wins (35), points (76), goal differential (+62), goals for (174) and goals against (112)...The Bruins are second in the NHL in points (76) wins (35) and are third in the league in goals against (112).
