Julien to Serve as Eastern Conference Coach
Bruins head coach Claude Julien
Boston, MA – The NHL announced today that Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julien has been named the head coach of the 2009 Eastern Conference All-Stars in the 2009 NHL All-Star Game. This year’s All-Star Game is being held on Sunday, January 25 at the Bell Centre in Montreal at 6:00 p.m. ET (National TV: VERSUS).

Julien has piloted the Bruins to the team’s best start since the 1929-30 season with a 30-7-4 record (points percentage of .780) and an Eastern Conference leading 64 points. Julien will make his first career NHL All-Star coaching appearance in the city where he coached the Canadiens for 159 games over three seasons from 2002-03 to 2005-06.

Under the selection process for All-Star coaches, the head coaches and assistant coaches are the two teams with the top points percentage in their respective conferences through games tonight, January 10. San Jose’s Todd McLellan will lead the Western Conference squad and will be assisted by Detroit’s Mike Babcock, while the Eastern Conference assistant coach position is still undetermined entering tonight’s games. Head coaches Bruce Boudreau of the Washington Capitals and Guy Carbonneau of the Montreal Canadiens are still in contention for the role, which will go to the winner of tonight’s game between the clubs at Montreal.

Julien is the sixth different Bruin involved in the NHL’s All-Star festivities, as captain Zdeno Chara, center Marc Savard and goaltender Tim Thomas were chosen for the Eastern Conference All-Star team, while rookie Blake Wheeler and second-year winger Milan Lucic were selected to participate in the 2009 NHL YoungStars Game.

The Bruins play the fifth game of a six-game homestand on Saturday, January 10 when they host the Carolina Hurricanes at 1:00 p.m. ET.
