B's draft pick, Mark Goggin.
Wilmington, MA -- The Goggin brothers, Connor and Mark, are as close as can be, but on the ice competition is the name of the game.

“We’ve been competitive with each other since we were little and I think it’s just helped us both get better,” said Connor, who, like Mark, attended Boston Bruins Development Camp in July. “But when we’re at this stage, we just want to see each other both do well and just have fun.”

Thankfully, that competition never turned into sibling rivalry, as Mark and Connor have been playing on teams together for as long as they can remember. Most recently, they were teamed up on their high school team at Choate Rosemary Hall, a prep school in Connecticut.

Mark decided to attend Choate after hearing Connor’s rave reviews about the school and coaches.

For similar reasons, both skaters will be dressed in green hockey jerseys this time next year.

Mark, who needs to complete his senior year at Choate before following his brother to college, talked about both of their commitments to play at Dartmouth University.

“We have family ties at Dartmouth,” Mark explained. “My grandpa played there, my dad played there, my older brother’s going there, and it’s just kept in the family.

“I like playing with my older brother and it seemed like a good spot for me (next year).”

Connor, who will start at Dartmouth in just a few weeks, pointed out that there were a lot of other benefits to attending college in Hanover, New Hampshire. Beyond the world famous Ivy League education and family tradition, the hockey team itself boasts a terrific coaching staff led by Bob Gaudet.

“I’m very excited,” said Connor, with a smile to confirm the understatement.

The Big Green should be excited about the addition of the Goggin brothers.

Connor, like many older brothers, is a born protector and skates as a defenseman.

“He plays almost the entire game and never gets winded,” said Mark of his big bro. “Without him, our team would be nowhere.”

At Development Camp, Connor proved he wasn’t too shabby on the offensive side of the puck either, and displayed a beautiful top-shelf wrister following a scrimmage.

Drafted in the seventh round by the Bruins, 197th overall, in this year’s draft, Mark remains an offensive standout for Choate. He led the squad in points with 36 (via 15 goals and 21 assists), tallied in a mere 21 games and also participated in two overseas tournaments for the United States under-18 team.

Of course, Connor didn’t even know he would be accompanying his brother to the B’s Development Camp until the very last minute, when he received a special invite.
“I wish I knew a little earlier,” admitted Connor at the beginning of camp. “But, we’ll see what happens!”

What happened was that the Goggin boys quickly made a name for themselves while wearing Black & Gold.

But first things first, Choate and Dartmouth beckon in September -- pro hockey will have to wait.

“We’ve become really good friends over the years we’ve been playing together,” said Mark. “Going to Dartmouth together is going to be great.”

Connor acknowledged how strange the separation will be after several seasons of playing alongside his brother.

“In the summer, we hang out everyday,” he said. “We basically wake up and go lift together, then we go skate together, and then at night, we’re pretty inseparable.

“We enjoy each other’s company.”

Connor thought for a moment and got serious.

“Without him, I don’t think I’d be where I am today,” he said. “And I think he’d say the same thing.”
