Following the Frenzy
Welcome Back…
We’re just going through a post-mortem today.
What we’ve done here in our war room is put up the remaining available players – those that are free and those that are being shopped, so it gives us a better measuring stick for the market.

Certainly we will look into what I call the post-UFA trade market, which is the next level of teams looking for players.  We’re going to look to improve our team that way, so I guess we’re hard at work again today following a little bit of a break from yesterday.
Yesterday, I wrote a bit about the frenzy.

The frenzy is more or less hurry up and wait, which gets frustrating at times for the teams and the players.  It’s a process that you have to go through. We went through it and got the player we wanted.
I know a lot of people want to know about Marian Hossa.

Certainly we discussed Marian long and hard, and as I’ve said publicly, he’s a terrific player.   But when a player says he wants to go to an elite team and we’re not on that list of elite teams - but we’re on his list of teams - it suggests to me that there would be a tremendous premium above the normal premium that we have to pay for him in the free market. We explored it.  Again, he is a super player, but we feel that the impact we got with Michael Ryder will be significant in light of what we would have to pay in order to get Marian.
Keep in mind that even if we decided that we were going after him aggressively, we weren’t even sure we would get Marian because we were quite down on his list of teams.
These are the types of decisions you have to make. We foresaw those decisions and, as I’ve said before, you have to target a guy and go after him hard because he’s going to have other teams going after him.  We felt that we couldn’t make it work economically at the number we’d have to pay for Marian.  At the same time, there was a chance we weren’t going to get him because we were down on his list.
These are just some of the thoughts that go through our heads during this crazy period, but I wanted to share them with you.
We’ll see you back here soon.
