Shawn Thornton: Bostonian
It didn't take Shawn Thornton long to become a true member of the Black & Gold during this past season and it took him even less time to become a Bostonian.

And now, with a little more time on their hands during the summer, Thornton and his wife, Erin, have augmented their familiar Hub-centered routine by exploring all that the greater Boston area has to offer.

“Still, I am doing the same stuff [that I did when I first got here],” Thornton said. “I am trying to go to Sox games. I went to the lacrosse finals over the weekend and I am still trying to get to know the city.

“But during the season, you are so busy that you don’t get to enjoy it as much as you like,” he continued. “Now that there is time to relax, it has been tough to stay inside when there is so much going on here -- my wife and I are having a good time.”

So far, the most exciting part of Shawn’s summer was a trip to Gillette Stadium to watch his cousin, Zack Greer, play for Duke in the Final Four of the NCAA Lacrosse Championships.

“It would have been better if Duke had won,” Thornton expressed. “But I had a bunch of family in town to watch it, so it was an awesome time anyway.”

Another fun outing for the bruiser was the WZLX golf tournament where he met legendary rocker and golf enthusiast, Alice Cooper. Always modest, Thornton joked around saying how well Cooper played, but this summer the B's forward hopes to improve his game by spending as much time as possible out on the course.

However, when he was asked if he might catch teammate and scratch golfer Marc Savard on the links, Thornton responded with a big chuckle, and said, “No, no. I could play for 100 years and I will never be as good as him.”

With golf filling his afternoons, Shawn leaves the mornings open for off-ice training.

“[Bruins strength and conditioning coach John Whitesides] tells me I have to work out everyday,” he said. “We just got back into training though, so I am pretty sore right now.

"But I am excited to get ready for training camp."

Training camp? The Stanley Cup Finals are still going on, Thorts!

"I haven’t watched a game since we were done; I haven’t watched one hockey game,” said a suddenly intense Thornton. “I can’t watch it. I’d rather be there. It is frustrating not being there, so I don’t want to watch it.”

For Thornton, the season has been over for six weeks and he is ready to get going again. Wearing his desire to bring the glory of a Stanley Cup back to the Hub of Hockey on his sleeve, Shawn, who took home the jug with Anaheim last summer, has no desire to pay attention to this year's finals.

Simply put, Thornton wants to taste that glory again while wearing Black & Gold.

“I think we are pretty satisfied with what happened this year,” Thornton said about the team’s success. “But I am looking forward to next year."

Thornton and the other Stanley Cup champion on the roster, defenseman Aaron Ward, will certainly help their teammates keep their eyes on the ultimate prize.

“I know they brought Wardo back, and he is a big part of it," said Thornton. "He is obviously going to bring his leadership and determination every night – blocking shots and putting his face on the line.

“I myself am looking forward to next year; I think we are going to have a good team.”

But for now, the summer is all training, golf and Red Sox games.

"I pretty much spend the summertime just trying to relax and enjoy the day," said the B's policeman. "I am still trying to get my house together, too."

And even though he tries not to visit the rink too much, he may not be able to stay away for long.

Living so close to Wilmington, Thornton said he might stop by to "see what's going on and say 'Hi' to the boys."
