“Ladies and gentlemen, start your razors.”

With those words, seven Boston Bruins players sat somewhat stoically, but with smiles on their faces, as hair stylists from Dellaria Salons shaved their heads while a room of about 100 fans and media watched, cheering and snapping photos in the basement of WBCN.

“It’s just hair, right?” said Patrice Bergeron, one of the six Bruins who participated in the event, before entering the room.

Fans who donated to the “Cuts for a Cause” fundraiser for MassGeneral Hospital for Children had the chance to win a spot for them and a guest at the event.

Melissa and Chris from Rockland were both excited to be able to watch the B’s – specifically Lucic and Kessel, they said – lose their hair for a good cause.

“I was reading about Luch online, and saw the ad to donate some money,” explained Melissa, “and next thing I know, they called me up, and I’m here!”

Six fans, who won auctions for the chance to help shave the players’ heads, also joined in the fun and received an autographed jersey from one of the six Bruins.

Aaron Ward, the mind behind “Cuts for a Cause,” was the first to go under the razor, happily playing along as, due to some requests, the stylist shaved his hair off in a Danny DeVito-esqe style before taking to the rest of Ward’s head.

“We do a lot of charity events, but this is our first time shaving heads,” said Alexandra Adelman, one of the stylists.

Andrew Alberts, Bergeron, Milan Lucic, Mark Stuart and Dennis Wideman felt the cold air on their heads soon after, and Phil Kessel, the last one to go, was brave enough to have get his haircut live on TV, but only after hamming it up by styling his hair into a mad scientist-style poof.

Both Ward and Lucic have done events like this before and weren’t too scared at the prospect of losing their hair for a few weeks.

“I know what I’m going to look like at least,” said Lucic before the event.  “I’m more interested to see what Bergie’s going to look like, what Phil’s going to look like.”

Simply by sitting in those chairs and wearing those black hair salon bibs, the Bruins raised over $25,000 for the MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

As announced during the event, the Jacobs Family, owners of the Bruins; the NHL; and the National League Players Association’s Goals and Dreams Foundation all pledged $5,000.  NESN and Philips Norelco gave $2,000, while “The Buzz” contributed $1,000.

“It’s nice to be able to do something for the kids,” said stylist Gretchen Michaud, “and to help bring joy into their life.”

A few patients from the hospital were present at the event and happy to have a chance to meet their favorite players.

“I got all my autographs, so my goal is accomplished,” said a smiling Katy McLean, who is a patient at MGH.  Her friend and fellow patient Rebecca Washburn was also excited to get the chance to see Lucic.

But they were both even more grateful for what the event was doing for the hospital.

“I appreciate the fact that they’re doing something that they don’t have to do,” Katy said.  “They’re doing something simple, getting their hair cut, but that haircut raises a lot of money for kids that are unfortunate.”

The event was held in conjunction with the Toucher and Rich show on WBCN, which broadcast the whole event, plus an interview with the players, live on-air and entertained the crowd.
