Chiarelli: \"I have confidence in this team.\"\r\n

Boston, MA -- After a grueling effort in the Black & Gold's "War Room" Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli addressed the media just an hour and a half after the 3:00 p.m. NHL Trade Deadline passed.

"Let me just start by saying that although the deadline was at 3 p.m. it was a long day," said Chiarelli. "We put in a lot of time, starting out with pro scouting meetings, [through] subsequent conference calls and then we kind of jam ourselves into a 'War Room' for a couple of days.

"We went into this trade deadline wanting to…improve our team. But at the same time we have a plan in place whereby I want to continue to inject our youth into the lineup and into a competitive environment.

"Today we targeted two basic transactions but we ended up [not] being a party to them," he said.

Chiarelli explained that the two deals "would have bettered" the Bruins. But one trade would have required too steep a price and the other deal simply fell by the wayside.

"We thought today was a good day [because] it gives you a good idea of what other teams think of your prospects and players. But I went into today knowing that if I came out of today with nothing [new] I am still satisfied.

"I like the chemistry on our team and there is always the chance that we may get a couple of injured guys back -- which, to me, is as good as a trade."

"I have to weigh the two sides of the equation," continued Chiarelli, who said he had to ask himself, "are we going to give up something that will benefit this organization now, but more so in the future?"

Today, his actions speak for themselves. The Bruins stayed pat and chose to move forward with the roster as presently constituted and with their prospect list intact.

"This year [the identity of the team] came to me a lot [faster]," said the GM, who said that included the way the Bruins "played and how we came back from deficits and how we competed.

"A large part of that is due to chemistry.

"And when you have to give up something to get something, sometimes that includes giving up some chemistry," he said.

Chiarelli also said that he had thought that the Bruins might not make any major moves Tuesday and had told head coach Claude Julien about those feelings.

"They have to be relieved," said Chiarelli of the Bruins players. "And absolutely it's a vote of confidence."

And there is always the summer and the free agent season.

"That's a large part of it," said Chiarelli. "You look at a 'rental' [player] and the way we look at is 'Can we sign this player?'

"And the flip side of that is 'Can we maintain what we are doing and get this player during the summer without giving up considerable assets?'

"That's a large part of the planning," he said.

Finally, Chiarelli said he would address the players before the game with an eye to reiterating that he had "confidence in this team."
