Bruins Notebook: 1\/8\/2007 vs. Carolina
No twine tonight
The Bruins had several scoring chances Tuesday night as they took on the Carolina Hurricane’s, but just could not find the back of the net.  Their 19 shot total is telling, but a number of those chances were high-percentage bids (especially in the first period), and a number more just missed the target (as in the waning moments of the third).

“We had some really good scoring chances in the first, but they didn’t go in,” said Chara after the game. “It was a really close game, and then score one goal…and they were playing well defensively, and we didn’t create much afterwards.”

Boston came very, very close to tying the game, similar to what New Jersey came back versus the B’s on Saturday night. Tuesday, in the last minute of the contest, Petteri Nokelainen, Zdeno Chara, and Dennis Wideman all got denied in the final seconds and their efforts lead to a last chance power play with only 17 seconds remaining in the game, but the B’s were unable to put rubber on rope.

“We just couldn’t put it in the back of the net tonight,” Dennis Wideman summarized.

Timmy!
Despite the loss Tim Thomas, riding a three game win streak, had another solid performance in the Bruins goal.  The netminder had 27 saves, including a few of the highlight show variety.

The Tank's best save of the night came with under five minutes left to play in the first period, when he robbed Carolina’s Eric Staal of a slam dunk scoring opportunity.  Carolina’s Eric Cole carried the puck down the right wing boards to the goal line, then sent a cross-ice pass to Staal, who was all alone at the back door, ready to stuff the puck home.

What Staal wasn’t counting on was possibly the save of the year from Thomas. Timmy was able to kick-out his right pad to slow the puck down, then reached back with his stick and corralled it as it was literally crossing the goal line.

“I saw it the (play develop the) whole way,” Thomas said. “When the puck came across the crease I lost it for a second, then I saw it again before he got off the first shot, then I watched it go off my pad, then made the save.”

As one fellow press box patron said, “he had no business making that save.”

Z’s a Star
Tuesday morning Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was voted in by NHL fans as a starting defenseman for this year’s NHL All-Star Game.  The big man is amongst Bruins defenseman is second in +/- with a +6 rating, first in goals, assists, ice time and points.

Versus Carolina, the captain logged a team-high 31:20 of ice time and an even +/- rating.

“I’m very appreciative of the fans who voted for me, and my teammates,” Chara said after tonight’s game. “You know it’s a team games, so It’s a privilege to be that selection”

Sammy Returns
Sergei Samsonov was claimed off waivers this morning by tonight’s opponent’s the Carolina Hurricanes. After hoping a flight Sammy, was suited up wearing his familiar number 14 on his back for the ‘Canes. The Bruins originally drafted Samsonov in the first round, eighth overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Sammy had 20:47 of ice time - good for second on the team - no points and an even +/-.
