Wilmington, MA -- B's rookie defenseman Matt Lashoff has a good sense of humor.

Before he slammed a power play puck through the Atlanta defense on Monday for his first NHL goal, he had a couple of, um, not so graceful moments. He called them toe picks.

In hockey speak, and in reference to the claw like device on the front of figure skates, a toe pick is any stumble that is not caused by anything discernable.

"I made it a little more dramatic with the toe pick," said Lashoff, with a grin that showed off his missing front tooth. "It's always good to cap the shift off with something a little bit better.

How did the goal develop?

"We were on the power play and the puck got back to Z," said Lashoff. "He just passed it over to me and I had a pretty clear lane to the net.

"I just fired it and that was it."

Insurance goal. Boston up, 5-2. Six-game losing streak broken.

The plain-spoken Lashoff admits to having a little more ease on the back line here in his second stint this season.

"I am feeling pretty comfortable here, since I got here for my second stint...the coaches have given me a pretty good opportunity to step in and play my game, which is a good thing. So I have to thank them that I am not thrown into a situation where I am doing stuff I am not used to or (having) to play a different game."

The young skater, mostly thought of as an offensive minded defenseman, says he is comfortable on the other side of the puck, as well.

"In Providence I have been on the penalty kill all year," he said. "And our penalty kill (in Providence) is going pretty good, and I think they have the guys back that they want. So if I am called to do that (here), I have no problem with that at all."

It's hard to believe that Lashoff has problems with anything. Despite being from the hinterland of New York, the Knickerbocker has a very laid back, almost West Coast, mentality.

And perhaps that was important for the Bruins on Monday, having come into the contest on a six game skid. After the 5-2 win, Coach Julien said that Lashoff had earned his time on the PP.

"The one thing that I really liked about Lash...is the way he sees the ice and he makes those good first passes," said Coach. "He allows you to gain the zone and...I think somehow we found some balance that includes (David) Krejci stepping into that second power play unit.

"Again, sometimes it’s moving guys around."

Lashoff is clearly enjoying his latest move north and the special moment that came with it.

"Your first (NHL) goal. Words can't explain it," said Lashoff.
