Bear Essentials: Sturm Has Scoring Fever
Let's start with some levity...
While I was waiting for pictures to be uploaded into the NHL's central database, I posted the following picture of Marco Sturm scoring:

One of the more active hockey boards ( had a caption contest for this and while all of the entries were not family friendly,  I have to say I laughed out loud when I took a look.

Now, I happened to ask Marco if there were anyone in the world who loves scoring more than he does.

"I don't know," he said with a chuckle. "I love to score and I love to celebrate.

"I always try to not go crazy but I just can't stop it, I guess."

It certainly is a very good photo of what usually happens. My favorite: Und now ve polka!

Being of Polish descent myself (Germany is right next door and shares many of the same customs), I totally related to the polka quip.

By the way, I have a photo from Saturday night that  reminds me of someone, but I just can't put my finger on it. Sturm is posed in exactly the right way...hmmmm.

John Bishop is the beat writer for He covers the Black & Gold hoping to offer a positive look at the team, not only from the stands and the press box, but also from inside the locker room.
Other stuff...
The B's return to Ristuccia today after earning a day off with their huge win on Saturday night.

Right now the Northeast Division looks like this:

Northeast  GP    W- L-OT
Ottawa        16    14- 2-0
Montreal     16      9-4-3
Boston        16     8- 6-2
Tortonto      18     7-7-4
Buffalo        16     6-9-1

Not bad...but I like the Eastern Conference standings, too:

NY Rangers-19
NY Islanders-18
New Jersey-14

Happiness is a team that stays in that top eight, folks, and through one of the toughest stretches of the season the B's are still there.

Nice job guys!

And another thing...
I have been looking at the video of the Aaron Ward hit, and I am a firm believer that an elbow was landed. Most of the writers I've talked to say it was an elbow (or at least a questionable hit), but I will let you be the judge.
Take a look at this screen cap:
Bouillon in white, Ward in black after the collision. (screen cap: NESN)

Rumors around the leage point to no disciplinary action.

Off to practice...

1:25 p.m.
Its a boy!
Just have to give a shout out to the newest member of the Hub of Hockey. Ryan Mitchell, all 7.5 pounds of him, almost arrived on time for work at 9:33 a.m. this morning.

Mom (Linda) and Dad (Darrell), who is the webmaster around these parts, are doing fine!

Strong work!
1:30 p.m.
There was nothing too extraordinary about practice today. There was lot of work on  5-on-5 situations, some 3-on-2's down low and a whole lot of shots on the goalies.

Yes, I did say goalies -- Manny Fernandez is back in the fold.

"He definitely felt better today, " said Head Coach Julien. "And obviously he's been cleared to practice so that's a good sign for us and hopefully we get him back to playing (shape, soon)."

As far as the rest of the injured Bruins go, there was no official update on Patrice Bergeron, but coach did mention most of the rest of the B's who are ailing.

As far as Ference and Allen, "They should be in tomorrow for practice," said Coach. "They felt a lot better today."

And what about the disappearance of Marc Savard.

"Just call it a therapeutic day," said Julien. "But there are no issues there."

Speaking of Ference...he showed up on Thursday in one of the more unique outfits of the year.

And he reminded me of someone very close to my heart, Hobey Baker.

Not only is Ference green, but he kicks it old school, as well. He's just missing Hobey's flowing blond locks...

2:05 p.m.
Finally figured out who Sturmie's pose on the front page reminds me of...

Sturmie certainly had the Scoring Fever last Saturday night! And the pose to match...

2:44 p.m.

Ran into Aaron Ward after practice. He was being quizzed about hockey today (not his head) and talked about one goal games -- with which the Bruins have become well acquainted.

"It is (a tough way to play)," he said. "It's a lot of pucks out of shin pads, and a lot of guys sacrificing the body."

Aaron explained that being able to stay with teams and win some tough games is important.

"I saw 45 (shots on Saturday)...we can't allow that many shots, but it's a good sign (to be able to pull out the win)."

Ward's most memorable quote: "If we pick up our scoring we will be invincible."

He then gestured towards me and said, "That was said tongue in cheek, by the way, because I know you are putting that one in."

Yes I am, Aaron. Yes I am.
