Julien: Bruins Happy, But Not Satisfied

Wilmington, MA -- In his usual post-practice media scrum, Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julien was asked about his team's recent road trip and the relative success that the Black & Gold had on the West Coast.

Julien agreed with the questioner and said, "It was a positive trip."

However, before going to far, he threw in the caveat that his club has "to build on that trip."

"We're in a league that plays 82 games," said the coach. "After five games you shouldn't be sitting back and thinking that you are in total control of things.

"We have to keep pushing ourselves to get better and to not be satisfied."

Julien stopped for a second, took that thought and expanded it.

"You'll hear this from me quite a bit, because it has always been my motto -- happy, but not satisfied," he said. "I think you get satisfied at the end when you are sitting in the dressing room with your 'reward.'"

Hockey fans know what that reward is, and there are 77 more games to go before the Bruins will even think about that possibility. For now, only one game matters, the next one. And the next one happens to be the home opener.

"It's got to be exciting for the players," said Julien. "We are coming home.

"It's important that we give our fans the type of game that they want to see, you know, (the type of game) that we have been talking about giving them.

"And I think there is a pride factor there," he said.

The Bruins can show their pride by sticking to the things they have been working on in practice.

"We need to be consistent with our game," said Julien. "And we talked about building an identity.

"This is an opportunity to show our fans our identity."

Case in point, Zdeno Chara.

Julien was asked about his captain's play and whether Chara's return to a very physical game was more a function of the team's new systems, or Zdeno himself.

"You have to give credit to the player," said Julien. "There's no doubt that we've changed our system a little bit, but at the same time, we keep going back to the same answers with this guy.

"He probably tried to do to much, because he is a guy that cared for the team last year.

"And he didn't accept losing," he said.

This season, with those same thoughts in mind and with very like-minded teammates, Chara has played very well.

"Right now, he's doing his job, playing his role," said Julien. "And he's doing it extremely well. He's getting rewarded for it.

"I think he's doing all the right things that we need him to do for us to succeed.

"The bottom line is that we came in with a plan in mind for him and we wanted him to play a certain way -- he's done exactly what we've asked for," he said.

For the most part, his teammates have followed suit, and that makes Thursday night at the TD Banknorth Garden that much more exciting for Bruins fans.
