By John Bishop - BostonBruins.com
On Saturday I was able to sit down with three members of the B's organization.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to turn those conversations into Podcasts until today.
So here goes:
2:23 p.m. Hey folks!
I'm here in Shelton, setting up. I am in the process of getting an update from my mole at the Garden as to what happened in this morning scrimmage.
The Bruins bus has arrived and Our Youngsters are preparing for their tilt with the Lil' Dev's.
I think I just saw Stephen Gionta...walk out of the New Jersey locker room.
The Bruins are looking VERY businesslike and I would not want to run into Mr. Reul, Mr. Lucic or Mr. Bitz, today.
More in a bit...
3:08 p.m. Message from the Mole
Here is a little recap from the scrimmage at the Garden. I am sorry I missed it:
There were two 30-minute periods, played running time.
Brown (White) Sigalet (Black) started in goal and Fernandez (White) Thomas (Black) played second period. Goal Scorers (times of goals are approximate):
Hoggan- B, 3:24. He carried the puck from his own blue line down the left side and beat Brown to make the score 1-0, Black.
Kobasew- B, 6:09. Out of a scrum in front of the net, put it past Brown, 2-0, Black.
Mowers- W, 29:00. Another scrum in front of net, 2-1 Black.
Karsums- B, 1:58. Open in front of the net he beat Fernandez to make it 3-1, Black.
Pelletier- W, 9:40 A very nice pass from Mowers set him up to beat Thomas, 3-2, Black.
Kobasew- B, 11:00. His second goal with an assist to Hoggan, 4-2, Black.
Bergeron- W, 13:45. Sturmie with the assist, he had the puck behind the net and found Bergy on the doorstep, Patrice beats Thomas top shelf, 4-3, Black.
With 8 minutes remaining, Mowers stung the post with a one time shot off a feed from Kessel. T.J. Trevelyan hit the crossbar early in the second period. All in all, another solid scrimmage. The pace was quick, quality was good and the energy was there...
The Rookie Game will start in a few. Keep it here.
3:32 p.m. The Bruins are warming up.
The squad is:
I will endeavor to get a roster for New Jersey, but we are kickin' it old school here in the small rink. Nice facility, though. Very clean. Nice sight lines and decent warm pretzels.
4:09 p.m. Game Time...
Time on clock
13:57 Left in the first. The Bruins have been taking it to the Devils in the first few minutes, outworking the New Jersey rookies and having more scoring opportunities.
13:23 Bodnarchuk out for hooking.
12:56 First real test for Rask, save on slap shot from the point.
Matt Hunwick has been on for much of the first period and has shown his speed and intelligence on a number of occasions. Good positional hockey.
11:00 Having killed the penalty, the B's went right back on the offensive and just plastered a shot on the Devils goalie -- I think his name is Smith. No rosters around...
8:49 Tuukka just got a piece of a breakaway shot by a guy named Davis. Nice save. Score still 0-0.
6:38 The game is evening out and the the hits are coming steadily. Denis Reul is playing lots of minutes on the back line and has looked smooth.
3:33 Bruins on the power play...tripping on New Jersey. Bruins employing a very aggressive style of play, whether on the O or the D.
1:54 Bruins lead 1-0. Marchand, Hamil, Bitz, Boyle and I think Bodnarchuk on the ice. I will confirm, but it looked like Boyle put it in during a scrum.
0:00 The B's go to the room up,1-0 after a VERY solid period of play. I am going to go track down the goal scorer.
The goal should read, Hamil, from Bitz at 18:06 of the first, Power Play goal.
By the way Rich Reddington from Naugatuck, CT and formally of Needham, MA, says, "Hi" to all the B's fans in Massachusetts. Ryan M. and Austin C. say hi to all the hockey fans in Shelton! And, last but not least, young Diesel, a toddler wearing a spoked-B came by and slapped me five. Thanks to everyone who came by to say hi!
18:45 The game is on and the teams have switched sides. I have a pretty good view of the Devils goal this period, so hopefully the ice keeps tilted in this direction.
16:53 The B's are on the power play again, for what looked like a high stick.
15:49 Mikko Lehtonen just tipped in a shot from the point, I think from Hunwick. Boston leads, 2-0.
15:10 Adam McQuaid off for a minor penalty.
12:32 The B's are back down on this end having killed off the McQuaid minor.
11:00 Zach Hamill has had an outstanding game. He, Marchand and Bitz are a potent combo.
10:15 Tuukka makes his last save before Courchaine is inserted. Carusso is in net for the Devils.
9:45 Jamison Orr welcomes Carusso by hitting him in the face with a shot.
9:37 The Devils welcome Courchaine with a goal. Boston 2, New Jersey 1. I believe the goal was by Pandolfo.
7:34 Hamill off for a hook.
4:17 Milan Lucic just got the better of a guy named Fraser in a very nice fight.
Milan, who was in the middle of a an offiensive play, knocked the Devils' stick away and the stickless NJ player decided to go. Besides the Devil skater sneaking in a couple of jabs, Lucic had clear control of the altercation and landed most of his punches.
Can't describe how businesslike Milan was in standing up to the Devils player, who was VERY lucky that he had a hold of enough of Lucic's jersey to prevent a hay-maker from landing squarely on his jaw.
1:00 Late flurry by Boston, who seems to have been knocked out of some sleepiness by the fight.
:18.3 High stick minor to Lehtonen.
Benoit Mondou, Pierre Mondou's son, and a former B's draft pick is on the Devils club.
Period over. Bruins lead 2-1, after two.
20:00 Courchaine led the B's back on the ice.
18:12 Adam McQuaid just cleaned out #53 for the Devs.
16:35 Bruins score. Boyle puts this one in. Boston leads, 3-1.
15:33 Courchaine corrals a shot, and then seconds later (15:25) makes another save.
13:45 It's getting chippy.
11:44 B's on the PP.
10:16 Bruins lead 4-1. Boyle scores again, this time from the point, from Lucic, who continues to have an outstanding game.
8:08 Hamill off for roughing.
2:24 Marchand scores to put the B's up 5-1.
Gonna shut down for a while and head towards the locker room. More in a bit..
9:12 p.m. Back at home after a long drive. Working on a game story.
The final score on the game was 5-1.
