Bruins Development Camp, Day 5
John Bishop is the beat writer for BostonBruins.com. He covers the Black & Gold hoping to offer a positive look at the team, not only from the stands and the press box, but also from inside the locker room. A graduate of Boston U. and Northeastern, 'Bish' grew up in Connecticut and moved to the Hub of Hockey in 1993. Since then he has made all four rinks at the Beanpot schools, as well as both Gardens, his icebound homes away from home. Prior to joining the TD Banknorth Garden staff in 2005, Bishop had written for several publications, with his primary focus being college hockey. He coauthored the book Bygone Boston in 2003 and hopes someday to pen a bio of Hobey Baker.

The players just got back from the mall, where Matt Lashoff, Wacey Rabbit, Milan Lucic, Denis Reul, Jared Walker and Alain Goulet all went to eat at Cheesecake Factory and took in the movie Transformers.

Everyone said that they gave the popcorn flick a big thumbs up.

The players also said that they were going to bed immediately so as to be ready for tomorrow's double session practice at Ristuccia -- the last practice day of camp.

So, as sleep seems to be a very good idea, I leave you until tomorrow.

We're back to the hotel and preparing to go out for some dinner.

After the on-ice conditioning test, the team attached small parachutes to their hockey pants to attempt to create drag on their bodies as they sprinted around the rink.

Literally, it was a sight to see.

After that, Tuukka Rask, Kevin Regan and (none other than) Hannu Toivonen took the ice for a penalty shot contest.

Again, another pretty cool happening.

I'll definitely have lots more later (or tomorrow morning), so make sure you check back!

Almost done with the afternoon practice session.

The new-B's started by looking down at the parachutes that power skating coach Paul Vincent had placed on the ice and eyeing them with distrust and concern.

But before becoming skating paratroopers, Our Boys were put through drills to test their stamina.

"Basically, I think (it's called) an anaerobic sprint," said Matt Hunwick. "It was seven times out there, from goal line to blue line and it tested, I would say, our leg strength and our endurance.

"We had the heart rate monitors on and we tested (our rate) at :30, :60 and :90-seconds.

"They were able to monitor, not only how hard we were working, but how fast we were recovering between the sprints," he said.

Tom, our Media Relations intern, checked in again this morning:

With another day of camp under their belts, Our Boys once again loaded into our faithful vans, many, like former University of Michigan defenseman Matt Hunwick, sporting Red Sox shirts or hats, and took off for one of Boston’s most prized possessions - Fenway Park.

For many of the players, not only was this their first visit to the Ballpark on Yawkey Way, but also their first ever trip to a professional baseball game of any kind.

For big defenseman Denis Reul and forward Jordan Knackstedt, both grabbed by the Bruins in the NHL Enry draft last month, this was a great opportunity to catch their first ever game.

“I have never been to a baseball game before, I’m excited to watch them play,” announced Kanckstedt after practice on Wednesday.

And the guys who had been fortunate enough to catch a game at the Fens before, were just as eager to get back in the park.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Boston College forward Brock Bradford noted, “the atmosphere is so much fun to be a part of.”

As goalie Tuukka Rask, in his second different Red Sox hat of the week, and Bruins first-round pick Zach Hamill sat in as guests on the NESN pre-game report, most of the guys got their first taste of Fenway Franks and Italian sausages on Yawkee Way while watching their teammates go prime time.

Zach and Tuukka both did great on the air, and after they wrapped up, the players got their tickets and entered the stadium - all except Zach, who had some business to take care of.

With all his new friends from camp, and most of New England for that matter, Zach made his way out to the mound, decked out in a Red Sox home jersey, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Zach was greeted by a nice round-of-applause from the Fenway faithful, and made his toss.  A little on the high side, but not bad at all - maybe he just wanted to attempt Papelbon’s infamous high-heat.

The was the last I saw of the new-B's last night, as the players sat together down in the right-field roof box, and I made the hike up to the Budweiser Roof Deck with Bish and a few other hard-working Bruins staffers.

And let me just say - the roof deck treated us all great.

Good game. Beautiful night. Good times. Thanks Bruins.

Nothing doing here, yet.

Our Boys are in the building doing some conditioning and stretching before getting their head shots for Bruins PR.

After that -- on ice testing.

Somehow that entails parachutes.

I'll get the lowdown on that, soon.
