Outside the Garden, Bruins Clean Up
Boston -- On Friday, May 4th, coworkers from the Boston Bruins, TD Banknorth Garden and Boston Celtics participated in Boston Shines -- a massive citywide cleanup, sponsored by Mayor Menino.

Boston Shines is a collaboration between city and public agencies, private organizations, universities, local residents and civic groups, which is now in its 5th year of helping the city look its best.

Included in the day's cleanup crew were Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli, TD Banknorth Garden President John Wentzell and Wyc Grousbeck, principle owner of the NBA's Boston Celtics.

Other recognizable personnel were former B's defenseman, now Boston's Director of Player Development, Don Sweeney, Bruins great and Hockey Hall of Famer, now the team's Road Services Coordinator, John 'Chief' Bucyk, 'Blades' the Bruins Mascot and 'Lucky' the Celtics Mascot.

NESN television host Rob Simpson was also there with a camera crew to document the event.

Although the primary goal was to clean up Causeway Street and the surrounding area, everyone involved was certainly able to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and bond over a truly worthwhile endeavor.

"I think it's great, especially when you get two prominent sporting organizations together down here," said Chiarelli. "It's a great day and it's for a great cause.

"And it is a nice break, too."

All three organizations received ovations from fans of their work, despite the building being quiet for the day.

"The thing that impressed me most was the cheers we received from our neighbors and from the cars passing by," said Wentzell. "That was a great feeling.

"It's our home and it was eye opening to see that the neighborhood looks this way, so I think it makes us all want to pay a little bit more attention."

Mr. Grousbeck was philosophical about the exercise.

"It's fantastic," said Grousbeck. "We love this part of town and it could use a little facelift -- we've got to get out here and clean it up!"

And besides, he said, "We know we can clean up Causeway Street. We don't know if we can clean up in the lottery, yet. So we just focus on what we CAN get done."

Sweeney waxed nostalgic.

"I spent four good years over at Harvard learning how to do this…with the facilities maintenance crew," he said after dumping some trash in a bin. "I like it.

"If every (neighborhood) business cooperated and took a look around their own little spot I think things would look a lot fresher around here."

Speaking with Simpson, Sweeney said that he had wished that fans would be carrying brooms into the Garden to use them for a different purpose.

"I wish fans were pulling these things inside this building to signify wrapping things up in a series. That's where we want to be heading."

Out with the bad and in with the good. Today was an excellent way to begin the summer for both clubs, but the last word went to Bucyk.

When asked if he and the 'Big Bad Bruins' used to do projects like today's street clean up, Chief thought for a second.

"Nah," he said. "We used to dirty them."

Then he looked at me and said, "Just kidding."
