A tough Tuesday night.

In the light of day, the score doesn’t look any better. 1-0 Montreal.

Ouch.

There is little consolation in the fact that the Bruins play Montreal here on Thursday and New York on Saturday, and by the miracle of Television (and NESN), we get some time with Sidney Crosby and the Penguins on Sunday.

Sure, we all love hockey and rivalries, and sure, budding superstars are important. No doubt, this weekend will be a great weekend of hockey and this space will be just as giddy as usual.

But this one hurt.

Obviously, the Bruins would have to go on a miraculous run to make the postseason and also get some serious help from friends and family elsewhere. And there is no doubt that they have been in a predicament since the beginning of March when they were unable to go on a prolonged run.

As a Bruins fan, studying the standings on a daily basis, you can’t help but understand the B’s situation.

#.     Team,         GP,    Pts
8.     Carolina,    73,   80
9.     Toronto,     73,    80
10.    Montreal,  74,    80
11.    Islanders, 72,    79
12.    Florida,      73,   75
13.    Boston,     72,    73

The Black & Gold practice is at noon today and nobody involved will be all that excited to talk about anything, I’m sure. And I don’t blame them.

Despite protestations to the contrary, this is a team, from top to bottom, who does care. They care about each other, the city and the Spoked-B. They care about making the playoffs. Many of them chose to make Boston their team and have made the Hub their home.

And now, so far away from eighth place, with so little time, and so few points available, at this moment there is no consolation in playing the spoiler -- however a few more choice sound bytes from Montreal locker room might make that role a bit more palatable.

In any case, last night was a loss. A loss like Saturday’s setback against the Rangers or the previous weekend’s defeat in Philly, but this one seems to hurt even more.
