In a game crucial to playoff positioning, the Boston Bruins fell to their Eastern Conference rival New York Rangers, 7-0, Saturday night in Madison Square Garden. The Rangers scored six unanswered goals on the Bruins in the second period to put the game away by the middle of the contest.
The Bruins went down early, allowing Michal Roszival to beat starting goalie Tim Thomas with a power play goal at just 3:07 of the first period.
After the early Rangers goal, the Black & Gold seemed to settle in and had 13 strong shots on New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist throughout the stanza.
But the Bruins luck ran out in the second period as the Rangers scored six unanswered goals. The first two scores of the period chased Thomas, the B's starter. In came backup backstop Joey MacDonald, but he too was unable to stem the tide and four more went by him.
The Rangers Sean Avery scored his 14th of the season at 2:41 and Petr Prucha scored his 18th on the power play at 5:07. Ryan Callahan scored the first goal of his NHL career at 5:37.
Then New York's Matt Cullen scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season at 10:05 and 10:37 respectively, with both coming on the power play.
Finally, Callahan scored his second of the game and second of his career, unassisted, at 19:22.
Tim Thomas returned for the third period and kept the Rangers off the board to finish with 25 saves. Lundqvist stopped everything he saw to earn the shutout.
Boston's Jeremy Reich earned two fighting majors in the game, in a noble attempt to change the game's momentum.
