Bruins @ Lightning
Storylines...

  • Tim Thomas will start in goal for Boston.

Last time he faced Tampa, on Nov. 30, the Bruins won 4-3 in a shootout. Thomas made 31 saves in 65-minutes of regular play, and then stopped Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Martin St. Louis, Eric Perrin, Vaclav Prospal, Dmitry Afanasenkov and Ruslan Fedotenko in succession to preserve a tie in the penalty shot contest -- a tie which Phil Kessel broke to send the B’s to the locker room with a win. Thomas has not had the greatest time with the Lightning over his brief (less than) two year NHL career. He is 2-1-0 with a 3.90 GAA, and a .880 SV% in three games against the Bolts.

Of Thomas, Yahoo Sports and Stats Incorporated report: Thomas made 44 saves for his third shutout of the season--and fourth of his career--as the Bruins defeated the host Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. The goaltender has won five of his last six games, and in that span, he also recorded his previous shutout as he blanked Edmonton on Feb. 13. Thomas’ only loss in this stretch came against the New York Islanders on Thursday. He improved to 26-18-3 with a 3.07 goals-against average while starting 46 of 50 games…Thomas has won five of his last six road games. He is 12-9-2 with a 3.19 goals-against average and .910 save percentage while starting 22 of his 22 appearances as a visitor.

By the way: Eric Perrin and Martin St. Louis are former teammates of Tim’s. They all played at UVM.

  • Boston is hoping for the return of Patrice Bergeron, tonight.

Bergeron, who is fighting through an undisclosed lower body injury (as are Andrew Alberts and Glen Murray), had two assists in the Nov. 30 game versus the Lightning. In his career, Bergy has played 10-games against Tampa and has scored five goals and seven assists for 12 points. This season Patrice has an 18-36-54 line. He was injured in the February 13th game and has been day-to-day since.

He is a game time decision.

  • Marc Savard is currently fifth in the NHL in points.

The 5’10, 195-pound center has been HUGE for Boston this season having earned a 20-57-77 line through 59 games played. And over his career, Savvy has been very effective against the Lightning. In 29 games versus the Bolts, Marc has eight goals and 18 assists -- good for 26 points against Tampa. This season, however, Savard has just one assist against Tampa.

Here are the NHL point leaders:

    Name, Team, GP, G-A-P
    Sidney Crosby, PIT, 57, 26 -70-96
Martin St. Louis, TAM, 62, 37-46-83
    Vincent Lecavalier, TAM, 62, 40-42-82
    Marian Hossa, ATL, 63, 35-43-78
    Marc Savard, BOS, 59, 20-57-77

  • Bruins specialty teams are key to the stretch run.

The B’s power play is currently eighth, scoring at a 19% clip. San Jose is tops, scoring 23.2% of the time with the man advantage. Boston’s penalty kill is 17th in the league, stopping opponents from scoring 82.2% of the time.

By the way: Glen Murray is first on the team with 12 power-play goals. P.J. Axelsson leads the Bruins with two short-handed tallies. The team has 57 power-play goals and seven short-handed goals.

  • Paul Mara played parts of three seasons with the Lightning.

From 1998-2001, Mara played 101 games for Tampa Bay, scoring 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points.

In 56 games with the Bruins, Paul has a 3-15-18 line.

    By the way
One of the Bruins beloved interns, Melissa Marchionna and her figure skating club from Boston College are competing in the National Synchronized Figure Skating championships in Colorado. Good luck Mel!
