As the Puck Turns
Goalies Tim Thomas and Dwayne Roloson had played against each other prior to last night’s Bruins win.

"I almost went to UMass-Lowell, but (Roloson) was going to be a returning senior," said Thomas. "He was an All-American his junior year, so basically they told me I wouldn’t play."

"So that was part of my decision to go to University of Vermont."

Although he is an NHL starter now, back in 1993 Timmy’s options were limited. So he was willing to listen when the green mountains beckoned.

In September 2001, The Boston Globe’s Kevin Paul Dupont wrote "late in the summer of ’93, Thomas was all set to join Michigan Tech, where he might have had to redshirt his freshman year. Then, on Aug. 26, coach Mike Gilligan called from Burlington, offering an 11th-hour shot at full-time work with the Catamounts. Without a scholarship in place, Thomas was soon making the 10 1/2 hour drive to Burlington, after first securing a $1,900 loan to help pay tuition. Thomas went on to play all but one of UVM’s games in four seasons."

And then Tim got a chance to show UML (and Michigan Tech) what they were missing.

"That year, my freshman year, his senior year, we played and I know we won the game, 4-1," Thomas said. "I bared down on it."

"And then I played against him in Finland in the lock out year, as well."

Obviously, Thomas has no animosity toward the River Hawks and is certainly glad that he went to play at UVM.

But has he ever "met" the man who virtually "sent" him on his long goaltending journey?

"You know, I’m not sure if we’ve ever met," said Thomas, straining to remember. "I’ve seen him outside the rink in Finland, talking to mutual friends, but I’m not ever sure that I have talked to him."

We gotta get these guys to sit down and swap stories, don’t you think?
