Stop-and-Go

Boston Bruins
After I left you earlier, an interesting practice became even more interesting.

The on-ice session became very intense as the coaching staff dissected plays and directed the Bruins players around the Ristuccia ice sheet until almost 12:30.

I also found out from the players that the reason they were late taking the ice was that an equally intense meeting had occurred prior to the skate.

On the ice, practice (as I know it) was turned upside down.

Instead of the semi-free-flow of a normal drill-based day that we have all grown accustomed to, associate coach Marc Habscheid stopped the players’ actions with two whistles when he saw a mistake. When they heard the Coach’s two sounds, the Bruins stopped in position in what quickly became a strange pantomime of a NHL hockey game.

Then, with the players staying in place, the very "animated" coaching staff -- head coach Dave Lewis included -- would then explain the error, tweak the situation, and start play up again.

Obviously, it is not the type of practice that anyone is used to seeing this late into the season, but the Bruins players and coaching staff know how important each remaining game is to the club, and they are certainly not taking anything lightly.

In any case, tomorrow is another day.

With one of Boston’s arch rivals, the New York Rangers, in the TD Banknorth Garden, in front of what figures to be a raucous home crowd in their corner, the Bruins will have every opportunity to turn things around.

Go Bruins!

Heard in the room
"It is what it is, now. Everything has to be on the line. We have to make decisions, continually, that are based on what’s important for the team to win. Whether (that’s) not playing a player, whether that is changing a line -- shaking up a power play unit or penalty-killing unit. We have to find people who are willing to do the right thing to win and we haven’t had that on a continuous basis…lately."
