Random musings…
  • During the Hardest Shot competition the Western All-Star Team will put Philippe Boucher, Joe Thornton, Nicklas Lidstom and Dion Phaneuf.

  • By the way, the Montreal Canadiens and the City of Montreal, celebrating the team’s 100th anniversary, will host the 2009 NHL All-Star events.

  • Yours truly will be very excited to see Alex Ovechkin skate in the Fastest Skater competition.

  • Sidney Crosby vs. Calgary goalie Mikka Kiprusoff in the Shootout will be pretty exciting, as well.

  • On the flip side, I am always surprised whenever New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur lets in a goal, any goal.

  • NHL.com reports via the Canadian Press that "The NHL plans to stick with the unbalanced schedule for at least another season after a proposal to change formats fell one vote short of passing at a board of governors meeting Tuesday.
A plan to switch back to the schedule the leagues used prior to the lockout, featuring six divisional games and 18 games against the other conference, received 19 of 30 votes. A two-thirds majority, or 20 votes, was needed to make the change.
The current unbalanced schedule came into effect after the lockout and features eight divisional games and only 10 games in total against the other conference.
Some teams are unhappy with that because it leaves Western Conference clubs with a more onerous travel schedule and prevents them from getting annual visits from Eastern Conference stars like Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin.
The schedule issue was also debated earlier this season during meetings in Florida, with no resolution."

  • There are three teenagers in the YoungStars game -- Jordan Staal, of Pittsburgh, is 18, our Phil Kessel is 19, as is Anze Kopitar of the LA Kings.

  • Celebrities scheduled to attend tonight’s NHL YoungStars Game and NHL SuperSkills include country star Garth Brooks, former Dallas Cowboys greats Troy Aikman, Drew Pearson and Daryl Johnston, WWE stars Edge and Torrie Wilson and "Prison Break" stars Wade Williams, Rockmond Dunbar and William Fichtner.
