Big Z spoke to the Boston Herald’s Steve Conroy about his roll and his methodology at the All-Star game:

So what’s a guy like the 6-foot-9, 260-pound Zdeno Chara to do with the skill set that has made him an All-Star?

Well, basically, he sits back and enjoys the show.

“It’s a little bit different, obviously,” Chara said with a grin yesterday. “We’re here to entertain and have a good time and play a fun game. Hopefully the fans can enjoy it and see as many goals as possible and have fun at the skill competition. This is not a game where you can show that ‘OK, I’m the guy who can hit the hardest.’ You just play the game, have fun and get a good sweat in.

“And the most important thing is to not get hurt or get anybody else hurt. I’m not going to be banging anybody around.”

But the defenseman will have a chance to get his competitive juices flowing tonight in the skills competition at the American Airlines Center in the hardest shot competition. In his only other All-Star appearance in 2003, Chara finished second in the competition to Al MacInnis, who won the contest seven times during his career.

“The most important thing here is to have fun,” Chara said. “But there is a little bit of competitiveness. You want to push yourself there.”

Chara’s competition comes from Montreal’s Sheldon Souray, Florida’s Jay Bouwmeester and Buffalo’s Brian Campbell.
