Hockey Day U.S.A?
We are just under a half an hour until the Bruins take on the New York Rangers.

Those of you with NHL Center Ice can fill in the gaps today by watching Hockey Day In Canada -- CBC’s coverage of our north cousins’ celebration of North America’s finest game.

But I am feeling a little left out. So how about a Hockey Day U.S.A., folks?

Let’s celebrate on the weekend closest to February 22 (the day in 1980 when the US defeated the Soviets in 1980) and just play a whole lot of hockey.

From Alaska to Florida we could cover the map of the United States with games, clinics and fun -- from mite through the NHL to senior games.

And how bout an entire day at the TD Banknorth Garden -- as an example of what would happen across the NHL landscape.

It would start with a couple of mite games early in the morning, and end up with a big triple header: Something to the effect of BC High vs. CM, then perhaps a college game like Harvard vs. Yale, and Boston vs. the Rangers as the big game.

I am a certified dreamer, but how about if those match ups were all over the map and what if each level and each location collected used equipment and distributed it to their regions hockey programs -- hockey is an expensive game to play, after all.

And maybe, just maybe, the one of those kids who gets an old set of equipment and is introduced to the game might become the next Mike Eruzione.

Until then, I guess we can all throw in our copies of "Miracle" in February and remember the U.S.’s illustrious hockey history as well (and for those of you who are saying illustrious, think Hobey Baker, the Seattle Metropolitans, John Mariucci, Bill Cleary, the Beanpot, the NCAA Tournament, 1960, 1980 and 1996).

Savvy a Star?
The NHL All-Star squads should be fleshed out by the end of the Bruins game and even if there is no announcement, I will post as much as I know ASAP.

I told him in the locker room yesterday, and I am telling you today: If Marc Savard does not make the game, it will be a shame.

He is ninth in the entire league in scoring with 55 points, and leads the Bruins with 40 assists and there is no doubt that many of the Bruins wins this year can be traced directly to Savard.

"(Beyond the statistics), he brings more than just the goals and assists," said Bruins head coach Dave Lewis. "He’s an important cog in the power play, he’s a fiery guy and he’s doing a lot (for us) right now.

Savvy has become an important part of the dynamic in the Boston locker room, and has brought a real dose skill and good feeling to the team, on and off the ice.

"He brings it," said Lewis of Savard’s locker room presence on top of skill. "On the ice, on the bench and at practice. He has a good feel for when it is time to loosen it up and when it is time to be serious."

Good luck to Savvy!
