The Scenario

Win and you have a shot at eighth. Lose and you are in 12th. This morning the Bruins are in 12th

For many Bruins fans it’s not so frustrating that they lost -- nobody is perfect. It’s the proverbial "how they lose" that makes us groan.

Loudly.

If you could write that this is not a good team, that would be comforting -- but I can’t write that.

This is a good, talented team, a solid bunch of guys, who, for whatever reason, have not been able to put it together for more than a few games at a time.

Unfortunately, time and patience is running out for the Bruins.

"We have to figure it out," said alternate captain Glen Murray. "We can play (well) and have the lead and then we just can’t seem to finish it off."

Do you have any solutions Glen?

"It’s happened way too many times," said Murray. "I think…we’ve said all we can. Maybe less is more sometimes.

"Stop talking about it and go out and play the third period -- like we know how."

Defenseman Brad Stuart was of a similar mind.

"Unfortunately we couldn’t finish it in overtime or the shootout," he said. "We didn’t sit back as much as we have, but still, we have to try and stay out of the box late in games like that.

"That’s important.

"You know you can talk about having learned…but I don’t think we have," said Brad of the teams lack of consistency.

And there were more than a few members of the team who looked to be holding back some emotion after the loss last night -- including head coach Dave Lewis, whose temper seemed to percolate as his press conference went on.

"It’s the same result," said Lewis of the B’s third period breakdown. "Nothing’s changed in my mind. We have to do things better.

"We can’t give up four goals (not counting) the shootout goal. We’re not going to win a lot of hockey games giving up four goals.

"Nothing changes in my mind about the things that are important to do. We were guilty of things that cost you hockey games. We had enough chances to score. We had enough chances to win, but we didn’t win."

What’s the bottom line coach?

"We have to win hockey games. There’s half a (season) left."

Coach was also asked about the fragility of the Bruins confidence.

"I am done with that," said Lewis. "We are 41 games into the season.

"It’s a battle. We have to battle for everything we are going to get.

"And we have to do the things that are correct. We didn’t do enough of them tonight. That’s why we lost the hockey game."

Help!
The Boston Bruins and HomeGoods are helping the homeless stay warm this winter.

The Bruins collected blankets, linens and towels last night, but if you didn’t get to donate, you can still bring your goods to a participating HomeGoods store until Monday, January 15th.

Donations will benefit the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. To find a participating HomeGoods visit homegoods.com.

Ice Girl Undefeated
On a lighter note, Boston Bruins Ice Girl, Melissa (pictured above), is undefeated in the Ice Girl Shootout Contest held between periods during Bruins home games.

In the contest, Melissa, who wears hockey skates and dark colored gloves, grabs a stick and takes on a member of the audience in a shootout from the blue line.

1st game: Melissa tied, 2-2.
2nd Game: Melissa won, 5-2.
3rd game: Melissa won, 5-3.
4th night: Melissa won, 4-3.
