A Big Weekend for the B’s
Yesterday’s New England pro hockey scoresheets, both the Bruins (with an important 4-3 win) and the P-Bruins (which despite losing 2-1, had P. Kessel score his first American Hockey League goal off of six shots), were keepers -- and provided a much-needed boost to every Boston fan’s attitude.

The Bruins, themselves, were very determined to turn their season around in one fell swoop.

And, as much as you couldn’t really tell what the Bruins were thinking following their losses to Nashville and Toronto this week (they kept their disappointments to themselves, for the most part, and besides, this is a family website), they certainly felt much better after holding on to beat the Flyers -- much better.

"Hard work, discipline, structure, getting pucks in, getting pucks out, big saves and special teams performing" were the prescribed antidotes said Boston head coach Dave Lewis, who has not changed his tune since he joined the club last summer.

"There’s nothing magical," he noted. "You can’t throw ’pixie dust’ over them and expect (things) to change.

"Some nights you try to throw pixie dust, but you usually just end up with something else."

After the above answer, Coach was asked if pixie dust had anything to do with mojo.

"Yah, mojo," said Lewis, who had said the team had lost their mojo on Thursday. "It goes along with the mojo."

That Coach Lewis was able to joke at all was refreshing and the entire building seemed to hold its breath going into the weekend. Phil’s fine performance on Friday and Saturday, along with the Bruins win over Philadelphia, let some bad air (think low tide) out of the big rink on Causeway Street and ushered some fresh oceanic H2O back in.

"When you get whipped like we got whipped (on Thursday)," said Lewis. "There is an emotional attachment."

Assistant captain Patrice Bergeron provided a needed boost yesterday, and obvious emotional boost, especially after Big Zdeno Chara was unable to go.

"He came down early to try it (out)," said Lewis of Bergeron on Saturday morning, and noting that he was not sure what they would have done if Patrice had not been able to go.

"We had a Plan B at (9 a.m.), but after 10:30 there was no Plan B."

And thank goodness Bergeron was able to go, as he led the charge in the last two minutes of the third and was an integral part of the Bruins success.

Chara has also been an integral part of most Bruins wins this season -- what is his status, Coach?

"He’ll come in on Monday, with the hopeful anticipation that he will travel to Ottawa. But it’s day-to-day."

Yeesh. Get better Big Z.

And quick!

Stay tuned on that front, true believers.

Even still, on Sunday morning, there are many reasons to believe that last week was an anomaly and the Black & Gold are a playoff caliber team.

They just have to prove it, starting Tuesday, versus the Ottawa Senators.
