Boston Bruins Recall Philippe Sauve and Phil Kessel; Assign Yan Stastny and Hannu Toivonen to Providence (AHL)
BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has recalled goaltender Philippe Sauve and center Phil Kessel. In addition, the club has assigned center Yan Stastny and goaltender Hannu Toivonen to the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Toivonen will play in Providence’s game today against the Springfield Falcons and then be recalled by Boston on Monday morning. Also on Monday morning, Sauve will be assigned to Providence.

Sauve has seen action twice for Boston this season. Both appearances have come in no-decision relief of Tim Thomas, with the most recent coming on Thursday, January 4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sauve has a goals-against average of 5.85 in NHL action this season.

In Providence this season, Sauve has seen action in 13 games. He has a record of 8-4-1 and a goals-against average of 3.44 in AHL action for Providence.

Kessel, who was assigned to Providence on Friday, played two games during his stint in the AHL. Last night in his second game for Providence, Kessel tallied the club’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the Manchester Monarchs. He has appeared in 27 games for Boston this season, scoring five goals and recording four assists. His last game for Boston was on December 9 against the New Jersey Devils.

Stastny, a 24-year-old center, is in his second season with the Bruins after being acquired along with Marty Reasoner and a 2006 second round draft pick (Milan Lucic) for Sergei Samsonov on March 9, 2006. He has played in 20 games for the Bruins this season, tallying two assists.

This season, Stastny has played in seven games with Providence, tallying five assists.

Toivonen, was recalled by Boston from Providence before yesterday’s 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, but did not see any action in the game. He has played ten games for Boston this season, posting a record of 2-5-0 and a goals-against average of 4.31. His most recent outing came in a 5-0 loss at Nashville on Saturday, December 30.

Though he has spent the majority of 2006-2007 in Boston, Toivonen has appeared in eight games for Providence this season, and he has a record of 2-6-0 and a goals-against average of 2.92 with the AHL club. His most recent outing with the AHL club came on Friday night, in a 2-1 Providence loss to the Worcester Sharks. Both of the goals that Toivonen surrendered in the contest came with Worcester on a 5-on-3 advantage.

The Black and Gold return to action on Tuesday, when the club will travel to Ottawa to take on the Senators at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Bruins return to the TD Banknorth Garden on Thursday night when they host the New York Islanders at 7:00 p.m. ET.
