Montreal -- The Boston Bruins fell to the Montreal Canadiens, 4-3, in front of a sold out Bell Centre crowd of 21,273 on Tuesday night in Montreal.

Former Bruins forward Sergei Samsonov scored two goals to pace the home squad to the victory, while first year Bruin Marc Savard also scored a pair for the Boston squad.

"I thought it was a good game both ways," said Bruins head coach Dave Lewis. "At the end, a couple of turnovers in our end cost us the hockey game."

With Tim Thomas feeling under the weather, backup goaltender Hannu Toivonen took the starting spot between the pipes for the Boston Bruins. At the other end of the ice, Montreal countered with their backup keeper, David Aebischer.

In the first period, however, the statistics say that the two keepers played like starters, with Toivonen making 11 saves, while Aebischer made nine. The only goal of the first period was scored by Montreal's stalwart defenseman Andrei Markov at 6:36. The goal, assisted by Alexei Kovalev and Saku Koivu, put the Habs up 1-0 going into the first break.

Savard scored two for Boston in the second period, and brought his squad back from two separate one-goal deficits, and sent the B's to the locker room tied 2-2 at the second intermission. Savard scored a power play goal at 2:09 (assists to Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara) to make the score 1-1. Former Bruin Sergei Samsonov returned the favor at 6:52. Then Savard scored another power play goal at 7:34 (from Glen Murray).

The Habs grabbed the momentum in the third period. Samsonov and Canadiens rookie Guillaume Latendresse both scored for Montreal, at 12:49 and 16:00 of the third period respectively, and put the home team up 4-2.

"They had quite a bit of shots," said Toivonen, who finished with 36 stops. "The guys played pretty good in front of me. I was able to see, pretty much all of them.

"But it doesn't really help when you lose…it's not fun."

With less than a minute to go, Boston defenseman Jason York scored his first goal as a Bruin to make it a game, however Montreal held on in the final 51 seconds for the 4-3 win.

"It's very disappointing," said B's defenseman Paul Mara. "We were tied 2-2 in their building, with seven minutes left in the third period and we end up losing 4-3.

"We had a chance there in the last [51] seconds to tie it, but it's disappointing we lost."

"You have to play the whole 60 minutes," said Lewis. "We fought back twice, tied it up, and turnovers eventually caught up to us."

With the loss, the Bruins fell to 14-12-2 and 5th in the Northeast Division, meanwhile the Canadiens raised their record to 17-8-5 and 2nd in the Northeast.
