Sturm eyes reunion with line
BOSTON - Marco Sturm is ready for the 2006-07 season to begin and hopes to be playing with the same linemates from last season, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Boyes. One of the bright spots of the 2005-06 season was the production of Boston’s No. 1 line, despite being the focal point of opposing teams.

Following the November 30 trade that brought Sturm, Brad Stuart, and Wayne Primeau to the Bruins, Sturm’s offensive impact was immediately felt. In his first game paired with the team’s dynamic duo, Sturm connected for a goal and an assist as the Bruins blanked Ottawa, 3-0.

Sturm had instant chemistry with Bergeron and Boyes, and the three stayed together on the same line for the remainder of the season. They combined for 156 points in 56 games, averaging 2.79 points per game.

Prior to the trade, Bergeron and Boyes were averaging 0.6 and 0.54 points per game respectively. After the arrival of Sturm though, their production nearly doubled. Bergeron played the final 56 games of the season averaging over one point per game at 1.04, while Boyes finished just shy of a point per game pace at 0.98.

In high anticipation of this important season, the last one on his current contract, Sturm has been closely following all of Boston’s off-season moves.

“It’s so awesome,” he said. “We all hoped the organization would go out and sign a big guy like (Zdeno) Chara and they were able to do it, so I’m thrilled. Marc Savard and Shean Donovan are great signings, so I’m ready for a new season. It can’t begin soon enough.

“Now, we just need to sign (Patrice) Bergeron and be ready for training camp. I have no doubt they’ll sign him up before preseason begins. I really enjoyed playing with him and (Brad) Boyes last year, so I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to play with them again.”

Sturm spends his summers in Germany and will train with his former team to arrive at training camp in playing condition.

“ERC Ingolstadt is the team I used to play with before I came to the states. They let me participate in their training camp, so I will go there to get ready for our season,” said Sturm from his summer home in Landshut, Germany.

This past summer, Sturm got a taste of celebration when the World Cup of Soccer came to Germany. He’s hoping to see that frenzied atmosphere in Boston with the return of a strong Bruins team in 2006-07.

“I went to three games in Munich and it was amazing,” he said. “The people went crazy and the Germans played well, so it was a lot of fun. We partied for three or four weeks straight, it was great.”

Like most of the team, the speedy left-winger does not know his new Head Coach Dave Lewis. Sturm has done some homework on him though.

“I haven’t spoken with him, but I talked to a few guys who know him and I have only heard good things about him. I look forward to meeting him and getting to know him.”

Looking at all of the new faces and some of the familiar ones, Sturm is confident that the Bruins will have a successful season ahead of them.

“We signed some big players and we certainly have the opportunity to reach the goal of making the playoffs,” said Sturm. “When that happens, you never know what else can.”
