Bruins pedal to put cancer in the penalty box

On August 5th and 6th, the Boston Bruins joined 4,500 cyclists in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) to raise money for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through The Jimmy Fund. The Bruins bike team consisted of thirteen cyclists including Bruins alumni Lyndon Byers, Gary Doak, Terry O’Reilly, Bob Sweeney, Don Sweeney, NHL player Shawn McEachern, Kim Jacobs and Boston Bruins friends and family. The two-day 192-mile bike ride began in Sturbridge, MA and concluded in Provincetown, MA.
The Boston Bruins were lucky enough to be paired with a PMC Pedal Partner, Jeff Hayes. The PMC Pedal Partner program was designed to connect PMC cyclists with the very reason they are riding and raising money. The Bruins team was paired with Jeff, a 17- year-old Sandwich High School hockey player. Jeff is currently battling Ewing’s Sarcoma, a malignant (cancerous) bone tumor. Terry O’Reilly, who has rode in the Pan-Mass three times, was excited to be matched with a Pedal Partner for the first time.
“I met Jeff and I can’t imagine how hard it is to have hockey taken away from him at that age because of an illness like that. If this helps him in any way, I am happy to do it.”
On Sunday morning, the Bruins bike team met Jeff along the bike route near his home in Sandwich. Jeff and his family were out along the course cheering on the riders and handing out water and snacks. The Hayes family had decorated the street with black and gold balloons, homemade signs and decorations to show their thanks to all the riders passing by. Seeing Jeff and his family was very motivating for the Bruins team and made all the pain and exhaustion of the weekend disappear.
The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge has raised over $145 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. This year, the Boston Bruins pledged $100,000 to this great event. However, the fundraising is not over yet. The Bruins PMC team is still collecting donations for Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund. To make a donation, please click here or call (617) 624-1928.
