The Boston Bruins have bought out the final year of contracts for left wing Shawn McEachern and center Travis Green, it was announced today by Bruins Interim General Manager Jeff Gorton. Both players had been under contract through the 2006-07 season.

“We are going in a different direction with our team next season,” said Gorton. “We felt that this was the best thing for both the team and the players at this time.”

McEachern, 37, has played 14 NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, Boston, Ottawa and Atlanta. He was drafted by the Penguins as their sixth pick, 110th overall, in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft and turned pro in 1991-92 following three seasons of college hockey at Boston University and a season with the U.S. National and Olympic Teams. The 5’11”, 200 lb. native of Waltham, Massachusetts had six 20+ goal seasons in the NHL with his best offensive year coming in 2000-01 with Ottawa when he tallied 32 goals and 40 assists for 72 points in 82 games. He had 2-6=8 totals with 22 penalty minutes in 28 games with the Bruins last season and also played ten AHL games in Providence from December 2-March 30 with 2-4=6 totals in those contests.

Green, 35, has played 13 NHL seasons with NY Islanders, Anaheim, Phoenix, Toronto and Boston. He was drafted by the Islanders as their second pick, 23rd overall, in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft and turned pro in 1990-91 after four seasons of junior hockey with Spokane and Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League and played his first two pro seasons at the AHL level with the Islanders’ affiliate in Capital District. The 6’2”, 200 lb. native of Castlegar, British Columbia had three 20+ goal NHL seasons with his best offensive year coming in 1995-96 with the Islanders when he totaled 25 goals and 45 assists for 70 points in 69 games. He was one of two Bruins to play in all 82 games last season (Brad Boyes) and he had ten goals and 12 assists for 22 points with 79 penalty minutes in those contests.

McEachern has 256 goals and 323 assists for 579 points with 506 penalty minutes in 911 career NHL games, with 12-25=37 totals in 97 career playoff games. He won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 1992. Green has 192 goals and 261 assists for 453 points with 737 penalty minutes in 939 career NHL games while adding 10-11=21 totals in 56 career post-season contests.
