Bruins acquire goaltender Tuukka Rask

The Boston Bruins have acquired goaltender Tuukka Rask from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for goaltender Andrew Raycroft, it was announced today by Bruins Interim General Manager Jeff Gorton.

“We had an opportunity, with three good, solid goaltenders who are all number one goalies in the NHL, and they couldn’t all play for us,” said Gorton. “Andrew had some value and we were able to move him for a player we really like, who is along the lines of Hannu Toivonen.”

Rask, 19, was Toronto’s first pick, 21st overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and has played the last three seasons in Finland. The 6’2”, 165 lb. native of Savonlinna, Finland played two seasons with the Ilves Tampere Junior team in Finland with a 29-13-11 record and 2.05 goals against average in 56 games. He went 17-3-4 with a 1.86 GAA in his final junior season in 2004-05 and finished with a 9-1 record and 0.87 GAA in ten playoff games that year.

He moved into the Finnish Elite League for the final four games of the 2004-05 season and spent last season with the Ilves Tampere elite team as well. He went 12-8-7 with a 2.09 goals against average in 30 games in 2005-06.

Raycroft, 26, has played his entire professional career in the Bruins organization, as the team drafted him with their fourth pick, 135th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He split his first three seasons between Boston and their AHL affiliate in Providence before breaking into the NHL to stay in 2003-04. He capped an outstanding rookie season that year with the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie, with a 29-18-9 record, 2.05 goals against average and three shutouts that season. The 6’0”, 185 lb. native of Belleville, Ontario played 30 games with the Bruins last season with an 8-19-2 record and 3.72 GAA in those contests. His career NHL totals include a 43-46-12 record, 2.62 GAA and three shutouts in 108 career games.
