Bruins Agree to Terms with Krejci & Karsums

The Boston Bruins have agreed to terms with right wing Martins Karsums and center David Krejci on three-year contracts, it was announced today by Bruins Interim General Manager Jeff Gorton. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contracts were not released.

“Martins had a strong regular season in Moncton and has played even better in the playoffs,” said Gorton. “David has improved in each of his junior seasons and he also had a great year last season. We feel that both players are excellent prospects and they will be given every chance to make our club at training camp.”

Karsums (pronounced KARR-soomz), 20, was Boston’s second pick, 64th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and would have re-entered the 2006 NHL Entry Draft had he not signed with Boston prior to June 1. He has played three seasons of junior hockey with Moncton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 86-95=181 totals and 196 penalty minutes in 171 career junior games, including two 30-goal seasons.

The 5’10”, 180 lb. native of Riga, Latvia was fifth in his team’s scoring race during the regular season with 34 goals and 31 assists for 65 points with 89 penalty minutes in 49 games as Moncton finished the 2005-06 regular season with the top record in the QMJHL at 52-15-0-3. Karsums, whose team is currently playing in the Canadian Hockey League’s Memorial Cup tournament, has added 16-11=27 totals in 22 playoff games as the Wildcats won the QMJHL championship and he was named their playoff Most Valuable Player. Eight of his 16 post-season goals have proven game-winning tallies, including three of the four game-winners in the championships series vs. Quebec and the winning goal in their 3-2 win over Vancouver in their opening game of the Memorial Cup tourney.

Krejci (pronounced KRAY-chee), 19, was Boston’s first pick (second round), 63rd overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He played one season of junior hockey with Kladno in his native Czech Republic with 23-37=60 totals in 50 games before coming to North America after being drafted by the Bruins. He has played the last two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Gatineau with 49-95=144 totals and 85 penalty minutes in 117 career junior games.

The 5’11”, 180 lb. native of Sternberk, Czech Republic finished second in Gatineau’s scoring race last season with 27 goals and 54 assists for 81 points and 54 penalty minutes in 55 games. He ranked third overall in the QMJHL playoff scoring race with ten goals and 22 assists for 32 points and 24 penalty minutes in 17 games at the time that Gatineau was eliminated in their third-round playoff series by Moncton and fellow 2004 Bruins draft pick Martins Karsums.

Both players will attend training camp in September. If they do not make the Boston roster out of camp, they will be eligible to play with the Bruins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Providence or return to their junior teams as over-age players.
