Patrice Bergeron’s playoff picks
Please note: This story was originally written for NHLPA.com and appeared on April 21, 2006.

What players are going to have the biggest impact in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs? What team is going to come out on top in the battle for league supremacy?

Before he heads off to the World Championships with Team Canada, Patrice Bergeron, one of hockey’s top young talents, gives fans his thoughts on the 2005-06 post-season.

On March 13, Bergeron became the youngest player in Bruins' history to reach the 30-goal mark, netting the milestone marker against Montreal.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

DETROIT (1) VERSUS EDMONTON (8)

PLAYER TO WATCH (DETROIT): “Steve Yzerman. He has the experience you need when the big games are on the line. He was great down the stretch, too.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (EDMONTON): “I’m going with Shawn Horcoff. He’s had a great year and I think it will carry over to the playoffs.”
PATRICE PICKS: “I’m taking Detroit in five.”

DALLAS (2) VERSUS COLORADO (7)

PLAYER TO WATCH (DALLAS): “Marty Turco has been great the whole year. He’s shown he can rise to the challenge. I think he’ll be the key if Dallas is going to win the series.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (COLORADO): “When Joe Sakic is at the top of his game, he’s almost impossible to stop. He always comes up big in the playoffs.”
PATRICE PICKS: “I think this one will go seven and Dallas will come out on top.”

CALGARY (3) VERSUS ANAHEIM (6)

PLAYER TO WATCH (CALGARY): “They are so tough to play against because of their defensive approach. Miika Kiprusoff had an amazing regular season and he should be just as good or even better in the playoffs.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (ANAHEIM): “Teemu Selanne. I’m not surprised at all at the year he had. He’s been a great player in this league for years. Anaheim will need him to be at his best.”
PATRICE PICKS: “I’m going with Calgary to win it in five game.”

NASHVILLE (4) VERSUS SAN JOSE (5)

PLAYER TO WATCH (NASHVILLE): “Paul Kariya is one player to keep tabs on. He’s such a smart player and he’s definitely even more dangerous in the playoffs.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (SAN JOSE): “It’s pretty obvious, but there are two players Nashville needs to shut down. Joe Thornton can always find the open guy and Jonathan Cheechoo is such a great shooter.”
PATRICE PICKS: “This one will be very close. These teams had some tight games when they met in the regular season. I’ll go with San Jose in seven because they were so hot down the stretch.”

EASTERN CONFERENCE

OTTAWA (1) VERSUS TAMPA BAY (8)

PLAYER TO WATCH (OTTAWA): “Daniel Alfredsson is the key guy. Not only he is their leader, but he’s very smart on the ice. Even when you put a guy out there to shadow him, he always manages to find a way to score.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (TAMPA BAY): “I’ll choose Vincent Lecavalier. He’s a great guy and a great player. He proved that he’s got the talent to be a playoff star when Tampa won the Cup in 2004.”
PATRICE PICKS: “I’ll go with Ottawa in six games.”

CAROLINA (2) VERSUS MONTREAL (7)

PLAYER TO WATCH (CAROLINA): “You have to stop Eric Staal. He’s so big and he’s a smart player, too. Everyone was talking about what he was doing after 20 games into the season, but some people figured he would stop doing so well. He didn’t and got better. He can be just as good in the playoffs. Rod Brind’Amour is another player that can have a big impact.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (MONTREAL): “Alexei Kovalev. “When he’s at the top of his game, he’s just amazing. I don’t think anyone can stop him when he’s on a roll. He’s also got a great shot.”
PATRICE PICKS: “Carolina in five games.”

NEW JERSEY (3) VERSUS NEW YORK RANGERS (6)

PLAYER TO WATCH (NEW JERSEY): “This team has so much depth and is so hot right now. Martin Brodeur is a great goaltender. He is definitely their go-to guy. Brodeur and Roberto Luongo are the two toughest goalies in the league for me. Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez have really shown how good they are with the new rules in effect. It’s very tough to play against them.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (NEW YORK): “Jaromir Jagr can do so many things out there. He had a great regular season and is the kind of player who can be unstoppable.”
PATRICE PICKS: “New Jersey in six games.”

BUFFALO (4) VERSUS PHILADELPHIA (5)

PLAYER TO WATCH (BUFFALO): “There are a lot of good players on both teams. It’s tough to choose just one player for each side in this series. I think Daniel Briere is one player that could make a big difference for Buffalo. Chris Drury can play two-way hockey perfectly. Not too many people think about Maxim Afinogenov, but he’s a great player. Ryan Miller has been strong in goal and if he happens to struggle, they’ve got another great goalie in Martin Biron.”
PLAYER TO WATCH (PHILADELPHIA): “Peter Forsberg. He’s my favourite player. I like everything about the way he plays. He can change a game in his team’s favour with one shot. Simon Gagne had 47 goals this season. He’s very tough to stop. He’s very creative and a threat whenever he’s on the ice.”
PATRICE PICKS: “Buffalo in seven.”

PATRICE’S STANLEY CUP PICK: “This year is so tough. There are more than a few teams with a chance to win it all. I’ll go with Calgary to beat Ottawa in six games.”
