Capitals edge Bruins in Overtime
By Jeremy Lemoine

Boston, MA - Alexander Ovechkin scored with 1:30 left in overtime to lift the Washington Capitals over the Boston Bruins, 2-1, on Monday night at the TD Banknorth Garden. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Caps and kept the Bruins from sweeping the season series. Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart scored his first career NHL goal to send the game to overtime, the only goal the Bruins could get past Washington netminder Olaf Kolzig, who finished the game with 37 saves. Tim Thomas made 25 saves in the loss for the B's.

"(Kolzig) was good," said Head Coach Mike Sullivan. "He was real good. I thought he was probably the difference in the game."

After a scoreless first period, Dainius Zubrus broke the tie with just under five minutes to go in the second period and gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead. Zubrus snuck in between two Boston defensemen and fired a snap shot that beat Thomas high stick side for his 22nd goal of the season.

Boston dominated play and outshot the Capitals in the first two periods, but after 40 minutes of play, Kolzig had already made 26 saves on 27 shots.

Defenseman Mark Stuart finally got one past Kolzig at 10:21 of the third stanza. Stuart drifted into the slot just as Shawn McEachern circled out of the corner. McEachern laid a beautiful pass right to Stuart, who collected the puck and fired a wrist shot that beat Kolzig to his glove side to knot the game at one apiece. The goal was the first in his young NHL career and second NHL point.

"I saw McEachern turn up in the corner and he looked up at me," said Stuart. "I just tried to get there and even though the defenseman got a piece of it, I was still able to get it. I just got a lot of wood on it and it went in.

"It's real nice to get that first one. It's exciting. I think it would have been nice to get the win to go with it though."

The assist was McEachern's second since returning to the team from Providence on March 30. McEachern was happy he could be apart of the rookie's first goal.

"It was fun to play with Stuey in Providence and I'm happy for him," said McEachern. "I actually didn't know it was his first until someone told me, but it was fun to be apart of it. He's a good guy and he works hard, so it's great for him."

In the extra session, Ovechkin secured the extra point for the Capitals when he beat Thomas with a hard wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle. The goal was Ovechkin's 49th and 100th career NHL point. Ovechkin is the sixth NHL rookie to register 100 points and the first since Teemu Selanne and Joe Juneau both did it in the 1992-93 season.

"I saw the shot the whole way," said Thomas dejectedly. "It handcuffed me and went over my pad. It actually hit the top of my pad and went in. (Ovechkin) shot it while I was moving."

The Bruins will travel to Ottawa and face the Senators in their last meeting of the season on Tuesday night at Scotiabank Place. The game will be shown on NESN at 7:30 p.m.
