Montreal, QUE - Cristobal Huet made 32 saves en route to a 2-0 shutout win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. In front of a sellout crowd at the Bell Centre, Huet picked up his third straight shutout against the Bruins and seventh of the season. Despite the loss, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas played well as he turned aside 33 shots. The defeat officially eliminated the Bruins from making the playoffs this season.

"The effort is there and the intensity is there," said Head Coach Mike Sullivan. "We are obviously having a hard time finding the back of the net. We have to score goals and get our power play going. We had some opportunities late in the game on the power play to get us back within a goal, but the goals have been hard to come by."

The loss was the Bruins sixth in seven games, while the Canadiens won their sixth straight. Montreal, who entered the game in a three-way tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with New Jersey and Tampa Bay, leads the season series against the Bruins 5-1.

After a scoreless first period, Habs forward Garth Murray squared off against Boston's Dan LaCouture in an attempt to spark their respective teams. The fight occurred just three minutes into the second period.

Following the fight, the Bruins controlled most of the period until the Canadiens took a 1-0 lead when Murray beat Thomas for his fourth goal of the season. Alexander Perezhogin shoveled a backhand pass that sent Murray in on a partial breakaway for the score with four minutes left in the second period.

The B's entered the third period shorthanded with Hal Gill in the penalty box. Within the first minute Montreal found themselves on a two-man advantage for 2:33 when Boston's Andrew Alberts and Mark Stuart also were sent to the penalty box 23 seconds apart. Tim Thomas rose to the occasion as he shut down Alexei Kovalev with three straight saves.

"It's kind of the same story I guess," said Thomas, who made a spectacular diving save on Richard Zednik in the second period using the paddle of his stick. "The effort and the self pride are there. We're just not scoring goals."

Murray scored an insurance goal, his second of the night, off a deflection at 7:07 of the third period. Craig Rivet fired a wrist shot from the point and Murray batted it out of the air and into the net for a 2-0 Montreal lead.

The Bruins wrap up the second game of the current two-game road trip in Montreal on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. The Bruins will then come home for a three-game home stand.

Notes

With Glen Murray, Brian Leetch, and Nick Boynton all out of the lineup, Patrice Bergeron wore the Alternate Captain's "A" on his sweater Saturday night. It was the second time in the 20 year old's NHL career that he wore the "A" on his jersey.

Shawn McEachern logged 16:05 of ice time with two shots on goal in his first game back with Bruins since being recalled from Providence on Thursday. McEachern, 37, was sent to the Bruins minor league affiliate in Providence earlier in the season after playing the first 20 games in Boston.
