Maple Leafs rally to beat Bruins, 5-4
By Jeremy Lemoine

Toronto, ONT - Toronto's Darcy Tucker scored the only goal in the shootout as the Maple Leafs rallied back to beat the Bruins, 5-4, at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday night. Boston relinquished a two-goal lead late in the second period and then lost in the shootout. The B's are now 0 for 6 on the season in shootouts and have lost six straight games. Despite the loss, Tim Thomas turned in a strong effort with 29 saves. Marco Sturm scored two goals, and Marty Reasoner and Glen Murray added one apiece.

"We need to play more disciplined hockey," said Head Coach Mike Sullivan. "Sometimes it's tough to know what is a penalty and what isn't, but we have to be more disciplined. We end up expending all our energy on the penalty kill."

Marty Reasoner got things going for Boston and scored his first goal as a Bruin on the power play when he redirected a Mariusz Czerkawski pass into the back of the net 5:49 into the first period. The goal came shortly after the Bruins killed off a Toronto two-man advantage, the first of four on the night.

At 15:14, Sundin shoveled one home past Thomas to knot the game at one apiece, but 31 seconds later, Sturm regained the Boston lead. Sturm took a Brad Boyes pass, skated across the Toronto goal, and slipped the puck past Mikael Tellqvist for a 2-1 Bruins lead.

Sturm notched his second of the night, No. 25 on the season, on the Bruins power play 36 seconds into the second period to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead.

Jason Allison cut the B's lead to one when he poked home a Tie Domi pass at 7:39 of the second period.

At 12:47 of the second period, Glen Murray stripped the puck from Allison at the Maple Leafs blueline and potted his 20th of the season. The goal extended the Bruins lead back to two goals.

Shortly after Murray's goal, the B's ran into some trouble with an influx of penalties. Nick Boynton was given 12 penalty minutes, including a 10-minute misconduct for his comments to referee Dan O'Halloran. The Maple Leafs took advantage of the ensuing 5-on-3's and scored two goals to tie the game.

Sundin scored the first at 15:08, his second tally of the game. Just 35 seconds later, Bryan McCabe fired a slap shot from the point that dropped into the net after Thomas initially made the save. The goal knotted the game at four apiece as the teams headed into the third period.

Neither team was able to score in the third period or overtime session.

In the shootout, Darcy Tucker shot second after Mats Sundin was denied and scored the eventual game-winner as he faked to the right and shot past Thomas' blocker for the score.

Maple Leafs goalie Mikael Tellqvist turned aside bids from Brad Boyes, Patrice Bergeron and Marco Sturm in the shootout to seal the Leafs' victory. Sturm had a chance to keep the shootout going, but missed the net.

"I thought tonight we were going to break the shootout jinx," said Thomas. "We worked so hard. I guess it just wasn't meant to be."

The Bruins play host to the Ottawa Senators at 7:00 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Garden on Thursday night.
