Habs blank Bruins, 3-0
By Jeremy Lemoine

Boston, MA - Cristobal Huet made 28 saves and the Montreal Canadiens blanked the Boston Bruins, 3-0, on Thursday night at the TD Banknorth Garden. The shutout was Huet's second consecutive against the Bruins and fourth of the season. Alex Kovalev and Sheldon Souray each added power play goals for the Habs, while Tomas Plekanec added an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining. Tim Thomas made 38 saves for the Bruins who are now 1-4 against Montreal on the season.

"For whatever reason, the past two games our team hasn't had that jump and the spark that we showed the last six weeks or so," said Head Coach Mike Sullivan.

"Timmy was terrific tonight," he added. "He made some huge saves, stopped a couple breakaways, and I think his energy is what our team feeds off of. He's emotional in there and he gave our team a chance to be in the hockey game and that's all you can ask for."

The Canadiens scored a power play goal to break a scoreless tie at 6:48 of the second period, when Alex Kovalev beat Thomas on a wrist shot from the slot during a 4-on-3 advantage.

At 16:13 of the second period, the Boston – Montreal rivalry came out in full force as both teams expressed their emotion. After a few scuffles cleared in the Canadiens' zone, Hal Gill and Craig Rivet each received fighting majors, while Nick Boynton picked up a double-minor for spearing and a game misconduct.

"We weren't playing very well," said Boynton. "I was trying to spark the team a little bit and get something going. There's no place for that in this league anymore. It is what it is."

Montreal took a 2-0 lead with their second power play goal at 7:19 of the third period. With David Tanabe in the box for a holding penalty, Sheldon Souray scored on a slap shot from the point that Gill inadvertently redirected into the Boston goal.

Just a few minutes later, Dan LaCouture gave Boston their best chance to score when he went in on a partial breakaway. Huet turned it aside though and kept the B's off the scoreboard.

"The guy was locked into me and I pulled across the front of the net," said LaCouture "The puck hit the steel of his skate. (Huet) made a heck of a save on it and I don't think there was anything else I could of done. The defenseman was hooked right into my arm."

Tomas Plekanec added the third, an empty-net goal, with 25 seconds left to play to cap the 3-0 victory.

The Bruins next take on the New York Islanders in a 7:00 p.m. game at the TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday night.

Notes

Just before the 3:00 p.m. trade deadline, the Bruins acquired Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny and a second round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Sergei Samsonov.

Samsonov, 27, was in his eighth season in Boston since the Bruins made him their second pick, eighth overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He was fifth on the Bruins this season with 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points with 22 PIM in 55 games.

"I was trying to acquire a player and not just draft picks," said Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell. "We were trying to get a player that will play for the Bruins this year and that was difficult, as well as look and build for the future. Trying to get that done was difficult, but we got the deal we wanted to get."
